Let's Be Honest

I hate to say it, but I have very little hope this series will amount to anything good. For years, I've been a big Stephen King fan and though I've not actually read The Mist yet, I've seen the movie which I definitely enjoyed. King's work tends to translate terribly to television and film with significantly more misses than hits. Remember how terrible Under the Dome was? I gave it an entire season before I decided it was just too idiotic to continue. The whole time, I was thinking to myself, "Hank from Breaking Bad got stuck doing this?"

But as bad as all of that is, my biggest concern is the network that's chosen to pick it up. Spike TV? Seriously? Had the series been picked up by AMC, FX, any of the premium networks, Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu, I'd actually have a bit of hope. Yes, each has had miserable failures, but they've also had impressive hits. Spike on the other hand, well, let's say I'd rather invest my time in a show because it has a great story, script, acting, cinematography, etc. than because of the fact that I'm a man. The fact that Spike picked up this project suggests to me that the other networks with anything to show for themselves turned it down. I'll give it a few episodes, maybe a whole season if I'm feeling generous, and the thing is, I WANT it to succeed. It would be one more in the small list of King TV/film adaptations that were worthwhile and would give me one more good show to watch. But in the end, I'm going in with the lowest expectations possible. It's hard to be excited.

I would've liked it on AMC as well (or Netflix/Amazon). The production values would be much better. That said, the trailer just came out and it sort of looks...decent? I haven't seen a single Spike TV series in my life so I don't know what quality I should be expecting from them, but lets hope it's much better than your typical SyFy channel television shows.

I didn't know they were doing one. Spike goes for cheap, phoney and whoever they can get. Man, I hope they surprise this time.

According to another thread, a poster said he was on the set and it seems like this TV version does not follow the book (or was The Mist a short story?) or the Frank Durabont movie very closely. That's probably why we see so many new characters crammed into the trailer.

This could be a good thing, as it gives them lots of material to work with if they hope to have this last for seasons, and we aren't just inside a supermarket the whole time.

Perhaps the TV version takes place after the events of the movie version, and the Mist has invaded another town. I'll keep an open mind for now (I'm still concerned about Spike TV as well) but if the premiere reviews end up terrible, then all bets are off and I'm skipping this one!

I think ''worried'' is corect word for ''The Mist'' TV Series when comes to SPIKE production. Also after seeing
The Mist (TV Series) trailer they put out, i'm still very much concerned with the outcome.
I gues we'll see.

Here is the basic plot, from one of producers:

Thanks for that link. Now I see how they are trying to make it last longer as a TV series (focusing on people in different parts of the town). This could actually work well. Let's hope Spike TV doesn't screw this up.

thanks for the info i was wondering if they were going to follow the movie or do their own thing.

I'm curious about it, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

After the debacle that was Under The Dome, it's hard to get excited about any new Stephen King TV series.

How can there be enough story here to fill 10 episodes?? It's not like Mr. King's writing is incredibly detailed...

reply

Well from the articles that I've read, evidently the story is expanded to include more characters dealing with the onset of the mist in other locations of the town besides just the supermarket.

That's a real shame. I liked the movie a lot (even the dark ending), and I was hoping. Sounds pretty dire (and not in a good way).
