David Cronenberg’s ‘Rabid’ Remake: Soska Sisters Ready Their ‘Continuation’ of Body Horror Classic With ‘Female Perspect

I remember watching all the early Cronenberg on CITY TV. Weirder than Monty Python, back when TV was pretty tame.

After years of chatter and rumor, the Soska sisters — filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska, known as the “Twisted Twins” in horror cirlces — are finally on deck to make their long-gestasting remake of David Cronenberg’s 1977 body horror classic “Rabid.” The remake was first announced back in 2016, but the film is now finally a go, bolstered by Shout! Studios, which has picked up all U.S. rights to the film.

Jen and Sylvia Soska will direct the new feature from a screenplay they have adapted with John Serge from the original Cronenberg classic. The remake is now in the pre-production phase and principal photography is expected to begin in April.

Per an official release, the film will draw “influence from the original movie, [and] the remake will follow Rose, a young woman who, after an accident leaves her scarred beyond recognition, undergoes a radical untested stem-cell treatment. While turning Rose into the belle of the ball, the experimental transformation comes at a price.” The film will reportedly also offer up a “modern and relevant spin from the woman’s perspective.”

Just saw this. While definitely not on par as the original for me all in all, I liked some elements of it better, actually. I thought Laura Vandervoort, who's acting I've found hit and miss in the past, did a solid job in this. Doesn't have the haunting after-effect the original had, and lacks that special Cronenberg vibe, but it's worth checking out. Don't expect it to hold up to the original though.

It's out already? Theater or direct to video?

It showed at Grimmfest and is available now in the U.K. from 101 Films (as of Oct 7th), although that one's Region B locked. Shout! Factory has the rights to release it in the U.S., but I'm not sure of the date. You'd think it'd be released in Canada by now since it's a Canadian film, but my guess is that the Region A format of it from Shout! Factory will appear in the U.S. and Canada around the same time. So if you're in the U.S. you may have to wait a bit.

I thought it was pretty lame, mediocre at best. But if you're a gorehound like me you'll find some enjoyment out of this. There were some decent makeup effects.
