My review / perspective
Even though I was born in 94, I was far too young to really remember anything about the 1990's. So as far as the 90's nostalgia is related to this movie, I can't really speak on that. My coming-of-age years were around 07 through 09. But the one thing I could relate to was the main character and the environment he grew up in. I too, was once a skateboarding party-driven rebellious and confused teenager. So in that sense, the story felt somewhat relatable.
As in for the actual movie, I must say, I enjoyed it. For this being Jonah Hill's first film, I was impressed. The cast of teenagers / skateboarders was surprisingly pretty good. What I liked about the film was the raw and gritty atmosphere. Nothing felt forced, unrealistic, or over the top. It was a simplistic story that somehow managed to work. I enjoyed it. It's worth at least one viewing.
