Maybe I missed something, but was the hat itself powerful? She mentioned it was magic to the little girl and wouldn't let the shop assistant retrieve it for her, but I was never sure if there was more to it?

I'd like to know, too. Probably didn't want it to be "contaminated" by the shop assistance or so, but it was never really explained and she also lost it a few times.
