Matthias Schoenaerts as the male lead!

He would be so perfect.

I hope they don't cast a cheesy Chris Pratt/Bradley Cooper type.

That guy isn't even American nor looks it.

I would say Tom Cruise but since Nicole Kidman is involved, that will never happen. If Coppola could get him, I would say drop Kidman. He is by far the biggest star with more audience pull.

He does a great American accent and can definitely look American:

He'd be perfect as the brooding Yankee soldier.

And Tom Cruise?  No.

reply

Nah, he doesn't. Sorry.

Tom Cruise is the biggest movie star, no one can touch him. Schoenaerts only wishes he could have his career and the same longevity.

reply

Sure, but he's not a great actor these days, and not young or attractive enough for the part of the soldier.

He was the most American thing about Blood Ties and The Drop! not even the native English speakers could nail the New York accent like he did.

And watching A Bigger Splash, you can see why he would be perfect for the role.

Puh-lease! 53-year-old botoxed Tom Cruise is not going to play a character that was played by Clint Eastwood in his prime! He should be glad for having Mission Impossible for the rest of his life because his other movies aren't doing very well lately.

This is the kind of actor that they are looking for:
Filmmakers are currently seeking a “Chris Pratt type” for the Eastwood role

Grew up in NY. He sounds nothing like the character he is supposed to be playing. He defaults to that gravelly voice delivery that all foreigners use when trying to act in American accents. You would think all of in the US drink bourbon straight and smoke 10 packs a day when foreign actors try to imitate us.

The whole industry grovels at his feet because he has been a successful acting MEGA star for over 35 years now. The Studios ARE LUCKY HE DECIDED to carry on the Mission Impossible franchise.

Chris Pratt is awful and generic. If this is what they are looking for...well it is going to flop real, real bad and tarnish the memory of the original.

American?
Communication difficulties, especially in Union regiments, were a constant problem in divisions made up of varied nationalities. Such divisions included volunteers from Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and other European countries. One regiment, in particular,[which?] was made up of officers and soldiers from 15 different nations, and the commanding officer's orders had to be translated in seven different languages. Major General Franz Sigel had his orders translated from his native German to Hungarian, for his officers, then to Reports to him then had to be translated in English for the rest of his command and finally to German again, when Sigel received reports.

The US, especially in the North, had received a large influx of European immigrants in the 1850s, due to people leaving Europe to avoid the ongoing wars and rebellions there. Europe had been in the midst of a pro-republican transformation with people such as Garibaldi, in Italy.

The character as played by Eastwood, was American born and bred. Not an FOB.

reply

I would only vote for Cruise because of the ending but aren't we suppose to feel sorry for him. I wouldn't.

Don't judge my path if you haven't walked my journey.
