First Eastwood Remake??

Has any other film of Clint's been remade??

reply

There is a Japanese remake of Unforgiven with Ken Watanabe.

Hang on tightly, let go lightly

reply

Oh, ok, but first US film then.

This is not a remake of The Beguiled (1971), but instead an adaptation of the novel by Thomas Cullinan, as said in the trivia section.

“If one devalues rationality, the world tends to fall apart.”

reply

The novel is driven more by the female perspective, so this makes sense.

The novel is the source material for the original and this new version. So yes in my opinion it's a remake. Why the splitting of hairs? Why is that so bad to call it are make? The Coen brothers remade True Grit from the same Charles Portis novel. A remake is a remake is a remake. Nothing wrong with that...

The original The Beguiled was also an adaptation of Cullinan's novel, so saying that this version is not a "remake" sounds like a deflective rationale more than anything. The bottom line is that had the original The Beguiled never emerged in 1971, I seriously doubt that anyone would be looking at Cullinan's novel today and putting the story back on the screen.

Also, the final script for The Beguiled, written anonymously by associate producer Claude Traverse, adhered closely to Cullinan's novel. In fact, director Don Siegel turned to Traverse because he and Eastwood had found earlier renditions of the script to be problematic or insufficiently faithful to Cullinan's book.

"A Fistful of Dollars", if we're being technical

reply

The original poster was referring to Eastwood's movies being remade by others.

Of course, A Fistful of Dollars remakes Yojimbo's narrative, but the differences in context (taking a Japanese samurai saga shot in Japan and turning it into a Western shot in Spain) and style were so profound as to be transcendent (regardless of which film one prefers).

I feel the hugely successful " Fatal Attraction " is an awful lot like one of my favorites . " Play Misty for Me. " and " Three Kings " with George Clooney , is a lot like " Kelley's Heros " " The Gauntlet " has been made into it's own sub-genre with an innocent trying to get to the proper authorities to bring down corruption , think " 16 Blocks " I'm sure there are more.

... correct on all counts. I guess that The Beguiled will be the first technical remake in terms of using the same source material, but Fatal Attraction definitely borrowed the same concept as Play Misty for Me (with the significant difference of making the male protagonist married.)

Japan remade Unforgiven as a samurai film. There was also a dubious sequel to The Outlaw Josey Wales starring Michael Parks in the title role.
