Noticing the Asset's fondness for eating eggs, loving music, and almost the same facial structure as that character from Hellboy, me and a friend have a theory that "The Shape of Water" takes place in the same universe while Hellboy is growing up and hasn't met Abe yet so The Asset and Elisa must be his parents!

Taking one look at the amphibian man’s design from this film will understandably make many wonder if he’s related in any way to Abe from Hellboy (IS he Abe — after all, same actor under that costume). And looks notwithstanding, like you said the two share several characteristics.
According to Del Toro, though, this film has no connection to Hellboy. It’s possible “the Asset” is the same species as Abe, but as far as Del Toro is concerned there is no relation between the two. Nonetheless, this theory certainly has merit.
He looks and acts like Abe bc he's the same actor, Doug Jones. But of course you knew that. God I love Hellboy.
