amitabhs character's interest in the case?

one thing i fail to understand here is why was amitabh's character so hell bent on protecting the girls? what was his past?? why didn't they show that aspect of it..it would have so much more sense as to why he had become the way he did... the switch was too sudden for me from being just a crazy old dude to having been a special lawyer.

Totally agree. But, the way we were shown that he was "stalking" the girls soon after the incident, we are to believe that he anticipated an issue which could be life-threatening. As a retired barrister with an ill wife and now job to do, he must've thought best to help the girls and bid adieu to this world. But, I agree, they should've at least spent 5 minutes into exploring his background and interest.

its just a way of showing, don't just be a *beep* bystander, if you can, do it,
if you can help, do it, show courage, do it, whatever the means available, but JUST DO IT, don't just be a weak hypocrite bystander.
and in another terms, 'woh kehte hain na once a lawyer always a lawyer' khoon khaulta hoga kuch kar dikhana ke liye.

Exactly I think it's the same. Falak's boyfriend abandoned her during the case and Minal called him a coward. Amitabh's character knew he could help and didn't just stand by and do nothing. His background is irrelevant.

Why does it matter? Why do we, as a society, need to find reasons if someone does something selfless to help people in need?
Would it have been easier to understand his intentions if he had a daughter who faced something similar in the past? Or would we have accepted his behaviour if he had lost a similar case earlier in his career?

And why was he a crazy old dude? Just because he wore a gas mask to save himself from Delhi's pollution in old age or because he talked differently because of his mental illness?

He didn't become the way he did, he rather did what he felt was the right thing to do. What we always, well some of us if not all, atleast think to do but never really do, because more often than not, it isn't a selfish act and we, as a society tend to question a selfless act most of the times.
