If Evan and Sam have been in love and shacking up since they were teenagers in college why didn't they just marry each other in the first place? Plus when Lisa did what she did (trying not to spoil it) she immediately felt guilty and wanted to come clean. Evan and Sam however have been carrying on for 20 years, and it really doesn't seem to bother them that much. It does a little but not enough for them to stop.

I can't remember if they actually addressed why they didn't get married. Was it a timing thing? I don't remember...
But yeah, one would thing that logically, given their situation they would have gotten married.
But again, I think that's what makes the show work--by showing flaws in people and the extent that they run their course.
Ethan and Sam may have ALWAYS been cheaters. No matter what they seek the danger. They could also just be extremely sexually comparable but fall short in all other areas.
Maybe it's both-- Ethan and Sam got married because it was the "right" thing to do at the time but are still both not satisfied and also "adventurous".
I think they enjoyed the thrill of cheating more than actually being together

I'm sure they also feared it would knock out the whole group of friends. She still loves her husband and her life, but she told her therapist that it was the hottest sexual relationship she ever had. (or something like that) as an excuse not to give it up. I think they told themselves it was just about sex but in fact they are probably in love with one another.
