Seems to me like something big went down with kate's boyfriend from 1998/99, based on Rebecca and kate's reaction to his photo in that box. Please select an option and explain your vote:

(1) He assaults kate
(2) He cheats on kate
(3) He gives kate drugs
(4) He kidnaps kate
(5) He kills kate (unlikely but possible)
(6) He dumps kate and starts dating Rebecca
(7) He dumps kate and starts dating Kevin
(8) He dumps kate and starts dating Randall's biological father (no one would date Randall)
(9) He takes kate to one of those hog contest fraternity parties
(10) He makes a comment about a shirt she's wearing looking "pretty good," instead of saying "pretty awesome" and she interprets it to be an attempt to body shame her, she can longer take the abuse, and never dates again.

I am guessing this kid is either a psycho, sexual assaulter or he dies in a car accident.

11/ He dies somehow. This would be perfect for the cliche ridden scripts as Kate is still coming to terms with her father's death and feelings of abandonment. So what would be more perfect than having the first person she connects with afterwards also abandon her. Cue the pizza ordering frenzy and super weight gain.
