My kids know what drugs are. They are in kindergarten and 3rd grade. They also know smoking is bad and can kill you. Parents should talk to their kids about these things honestly---(sex too, but that is a whole other subject, if kids knew about sex there wouldn't be so many pregnant 14 year olds.)

I have a 8 year old niece and 5 year old nephew and I worry about them all the time.
Do you know that 1 in 4 kids are molested in their life? I know I was. (mine was sort of minor, I was lucky)
Thankfully, my sister is teaching them that there is NOTHING they should keep from them. Since predators always use that, "if you tell you will be in trouble" method. (it was used on me)
They are teaching them if someone asks them to do something that makes them feel uncomfortable and uses that line, to TELL! That they will NOT get in trouble.
Open communication is never a bad thing. Yes, it's awful you have to expose sweet innocent children to some of the horrors of the world but if you want to keep them safe, it's a necessary evil.
