I just have to say this..

This show makes me feel disgusted and shameful for watching. No other show has had this effect on me. I've taken some time to consider WHY this may be:

I believe it is in ultra dramatized way in which the subject matter is presented. It comes off a violence porn but I promise I am no prude. It must be so bizzare to outsiders to know that we crave sensationalized warfare (based on an ongoing war!) to get off.

It can be argued that all genres of war film, including documentaries, are all altered in varying degrees. This show takes takes it to a whole other level though and the content isn't handled in an appropriate way even though it could have been. Many others have already done so.

Otherwise I can't put my finger on what exactly feels wrong here. Regardless, this show is not just a miss in every category, but an embarrassment. The blame can't solely be on the creators, they are only giving us what we want.

Actually, the violence on this show is mediocre.

You should watch the preceding show, Vikings, or other shows like The Walking Dead or GoT. There's so many more shows out there showing far more violence than this one.

And what violence they have isn't over the top. Probably the only thing that 'disturbed' me was watching the actions of the terrorists who have the kids, and then, mainly because it makes me realize that things like that are really happening in the world and I am so isolated from it. I think what 'disturbed' me is the realization that, with the way things are becoming in the world, I might find myself no longer isolated from it.

reply

This show is PG compared to even some broadcast networks these days in terms of violence. NBC and FOX especially.

reply

I do watch those shows. I don't have a problem with violence, swearing, sex.. something about such a fictionalized version of this war just makes me feel wrong.

Maybe it's because the war hasn't happened on our front steps (or course except the acts of terrorism.) if it was, I don't know if we'd be making shows like Six.

reply

Yes, I think what's 'disturbing' is the reality of it. This is about terrorists, and possible real events. This is happening somewhere in the world. Girls are being snatched and sold into slavery, people are getting their hands hacked off or worse, terrorists are trying to gain the confidence of weak minded people on the internet and sway them to their cause to help cause mayhem. It's hard to watch because it's a reality, and that realization brings an array of emotions. But just because it disturbs me doesn't mean I shouldn't watch it. I'm not watching it gleefully. This show a reminds me of present day possibilities and actualities.

What should actually truly disturb us is watching shows like GoT, which push violence and rape as an everyday occurrence and sometimes with no rhyme or reason. (Before people push back, I am not saying don't watch it. It's just, if you're going to question your TV preferences...)

reply

Thank you for the replies and thoughts.

To the last: I promise you, the reality that rapes and murders happen every day are not lost on me.

I've said my piece just not well. I watch violent shows all the time. Hell a night watching Tarrantino is a great night here.

I'm talking about the way this show in particular, throws every cliche in the book into its first 2 episodes alone. They way they portray the enemy in the most one-sided evil way possible. Muslims do not even feel like humans. Sure, not all people deserve to be called as much bc of their behavior but literally no one feels like a flesh and blood living person.

Maybe we haven't had enough action on our front door step. If we were the war torn country on the other end if the war, the idea would he ludicrous.

You do know Boko Haram are murderous scum muslims that are going around Nigeria killing everyone who thinks different from them, specifically Christians? They really did snatch a bunch of young women.../ From Wikipedia::::

Boko Haram began to target schools in 2010, killing hundreds of students by 2014. A spokesperson for the group said such attacks would continue as long as the Nigerian government continued to interfere with traditional Islamic education. 10,000 children have been unable to attend school as a result of activities by Boko Haram. Boko Haram has also been known to kidnap girls, whom it believes should not be educated, and use them as cooks or sex slaves.

Boko Haram's attacks intensified in 2014. In February, the group killed more than 100 Christian men in the villages of Doron Baga and Izghe. That same month, 59 boys were killed in the Federal Government College attack in northeastern Nigeria. In March, the group attacked the Giwa military barracks, freeing captured militants. The Chibok abduction occurred on the same day as a bombing attack in Abuja in which at least 88 people died. Boko Haram was blamed for nearly 4,000 deaths in 2014. Training received from al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has helped Boko Haram intensify its attacks

On the night of 14–15 April 2014, a group of militants attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Nigeria. They broke into the school, pretending to be guards, telling the girls to get out and come with them. A large number of students were taken away in trucks, possibly into the Konduga area of the Sambisa Forest where Boko Haram were known to have fortified camps. Houses in Chibok were also burned down in the incident. The school had been closed for four weeks prior to the attack due to the deteriorating security situation, but students from multiple schools had been called in to take final exams in physics.

There were 530 students from multiple villages registered for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, although it is unclear how many were in attendance at the time of the attack. The children were aged 16 to 18 and were in their final year of school. Initial reports said 85 students had been kidnapped in the attack. Over the 19–20 April weekend, the military released a statement that said more than 100 of 129 kidnapped girls had been freed. However, the statement was retracted, and on 21 April, parents said 234 girls were missing. A number of the students escaped the kidnappers in two groups. According to the police, approximately 276 children were taken in the attack, of whom 53 had escaped as of 2 May. Other reports said that 329 girls were kidnapped, 53 had escaped and 276 were still missing.

Amnesty International said it believes the Nigerian military had four hours' advance warning of the kidnapping, but failed to send reinforcements to protect the school. Nigeria's armed forces have confirmed that the Nigerian military had four-hour advance notice of the attack but said that their over-extended forces were unable to mobilize reinforcements.

Jonathan N.C. Hill of King's College London, has pointed out that Boko Haram kidnapped these girls after coming increasingly under the influence of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and asserts that the group's goal is to use girls and young women as sexual objects and as a means of intimidating the civilian population into non-resistance. Hill describes the attacks as similar to kidnapping of girls in Algeria in the 1990s and early 2000s

See, that's the difference between us.

When you talk about the enemy being seen as one-sided in the show, you see the enemy as being Muslims.

I don't.

I see the enemy as being terrorists, not specific to Muslims. And yes, I see the terrorists as evil. With their use of suicide bombers and their 'intentional' attack on civilians, I can't see 'their' side. I'm sorry, I just can't.

I find it disgusting and a let down to have this caliber of actors all packed in a series with the script full of *beep* Do they ever watch Homeland Tv series, the scenes are real to a big extent, the infographics, geographical location details and language is real. You can relate to the current news with the movie and flow along. This movies sounds like an unintelligent dumb writer with a lazy ass producer not investigating to find out what is true. Common what will it take for the producer to consult movie producers in Nigeria and help them develop locations and scenery of a boko haram camp.
Imagine Boko haram in Benin Nigeria, OMG Boko Haram has never been anywhere farther than North eastern Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad Republic Border. Benin is in the centre of Nigeria and a developing Urban city, Boko Haram since inception has never been close to Benin, is impossible to have a camp there. Their presence in the Adamawa State axis is because is desert into the border villages so they disappear int the deserts. 2ndly the area B.H operates is mostly islamic villages so the girls should be properly covered and not on those american short school skirts. And how can these boko haram be wearing army Khakis, No they wear arab long tubs. They dont speak any other language except Hausa or Nigerian pigeon English. am just fed up! cancel this movie because its misleading people!!!!

The entire cast is made up of no-name actors. Walton Goggins is the headliner.

Do they ever watch Homeland Tv series
... two different shows, bud.

the scenes are real to a big extent
Really? Because the first three seasons were filmed in North Carolina. http://www.chroniclebooks.com/blog/2014/11/21/the-6-most-fascinating-homeland-locations/

the infographics, geographical location details and language is real.
Do you work for the Company?

You can relate to the current news with the movie and flow along.
Not really. They have a woman President. Oops.

This movies sounds like an unintelligent dumb writer with a lazy ass producer not investigating to find out what is true.
You sound angry, bro.

Imagine Boko haram in Benin Nigeria, OMG Boko Haram has never been anywhere farther than North eastern Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad Republic Border.
We really do not care about that level of accuracy. MOST Americans couldn't find ANY of those countries on an unlabeled map.

And how can these boko haram be wearing army Khakis, No they wear arab long tubs. They dont speak any other language except Hausa or Nigerian pigeon English.
It's not a documentary.

am just fed up!
3 episodes in?

cancel this movie because its misleading people!!!!
Uhhh ... no, please. Why don't you just not watch the next five episodes, if it's upsetting you so. Misleading us in what way? Nobody is watching this show, and then going to write a research paper on Boko Haram. At least, I hope that they are not. But, if you really think that a show should be cancelled, just because it wasn't accurate enough for you, then you need to move to a state with recreational marijuana and try a brownie.

Exactly.

There's nothing wrong with the show. It simply mirrors America's current attitude towards the world around it.

It's all in the way they propagate the ideology of warmongering while trying to warm the viewer to these characters by making them human, even though what they do and therefore believe is inhumane.

It's more disgusting than any violence an American tv drama would ever show.

reply

There is a lot of tv and movies out there that is so mega violent it is hard to understand how it is entertainment. I watch some of it. It is a social conundrum for sure. We acclimate to it ,the more we see the more we tolerate, expect and then need. How,why is it entertaining,??? How and why do we know that we can seperate the real from fantasy.

War stories especially are hard and they are nothing compared to the reality. NOTHING.

But it is even more confusing how we see so much violence as entertaining, but even small amounts of sex is seen as pornographic. Sex,..even with the amount we see today is still somewhat taboo. Unless we call it porno. So,pleasure and exchanging it between two adults is very uncomfortable for most,so much so that we call it porno....but excessive violence, despicable actions to another human is boring today unless pushed to new limits.

I watch a lot of things like The Walking Dead and many others with excessive violence. It is the context i have to be careful about. War is especially difficult because it is real. But I'll never get (even though I fully understand why,it is religious guilt of pleasure ) why we are in most societies so prudish around something so good and natural as sex.

We are far more comfortable watching torture and heads flying across the room than two people exchanging pleasure. In Europe nudity in tv is blasie, while in America it is still censored. And this while we sell, everything with it, Wacky at best. And it skews what it normal.
