shareThanks for including the link, SG. I checked it out, and reminded me of why it's so hard to find decent comment boards. Either no one uses it, or it's heavily censored -- like this appears to be -- or no one visits AND it's heavily censored. The entities who sponsor this type of thing are usually (95%) total funking control freaks. Makes me wonder why they're even providing the cyber space. Just to control & take the fun out of everything they can. You know their cats dread it when they come home.
shareMost message boards and forums are privately owned so that's to be expected.
That said, forums don't become active or more active on their own. People must become involved in starting discussions and joining in existing discussions.
You should also bare in mind that many of the Previously TV forums are still small, but it's growing, and if enough of us migrate over to the site, we can build it up quick enough.
Well, NO, that isn't really expected. If it's "privately owned" they can have as LITTLE conditions as they want as well. They've got 15 conditions for every situation: no politics at all, unless the subject is political, and it's a Thursday during a month with 30 days. Nothing personal, unless you're in the "small talk" section, and even then, not too personal. Nothing religious, racist, conservative, pro-American, anti-EU, blah, blah, blah...
But I hope YOU have a great time, honey. Sounds like a ball.
I didnt post much here so I won't post much there either, as I'm not really into message boards and forums as some people are.
That said, I've run many forums in the past (military SOs, Keeshonden owners, substitute teachers, etc...). Yes, a message board/forum owner can have little conditions as well, but ultimately it's up to each owner how little or much they choose to have. Those that have the most conditions and that are tightly run and monitored are actually the most active, successful forums. Most message boards/forums fail. Heck, the don't even survive the first year. Those with little conditions and that aren't tightly run and monitored are the ones that tend to quickly succumb to spammers and trolls who ultimately push the loyal few away. They get so bad with the spamming and trolling that even those who own and manage them disappear after awhile because they're not sure how to fix it and what could've been done from the start to prevent it.
Thanks for that reply. I don't know much about the motives/mechanisms of chat boards; just what I like and don't like. It seems to me, anyone in that endeavor would try to mimic the more successful boards, then try to improve upon it, if they're inclined.
THIS is a very successful chat board, no matter what management's excuse is for terminating it (after a dozen plus years). While it's moderated, it's on the low-end of censorship & "nannyquette". My all-time fav chat board/comment section is YouTube. They barely have "nannyquette". I frequent another sports chat board, and that's lightly censored. Notice a pattern?
I've visited dozens of boards over the years, and most are overly-censored, imho. Because of that, and limited membership -- of which heavy nannyquette may be partially/mostly responsible -- I dump them fast. The bottom-line is, the board has to be fun for me to revisit. Spam & "trolling" are going to happen. But there are fairly easy & common ways to minimize them, like "Block" buttons.
But, when the owners get in the way, that's death to the board. They more than anything/anyone else can suck the life & fun out of it. I don't know if that's YOUR board or not. It doesn't make any difference to me. But, it's TOO overly "managed".
Think of a chat board as a party. People go to a party to enjoy themselves & forget their problems for a few hours. Sometimes naturally unpleasant people are invited to the same party. Sometimes people drink too much and become obnoxious. What do you do so that your experience isn't ruined? Avoid them. Tell them to get lost, etc. It usually works. But when the hosts say, "Please don't be too loud, the baby's sleeping," or, "Only 2 beers to a guest," what do you do? You get the fock out of there, right?!
The people who run forums tend to be power mad idiots who end up killing their own sites and then wonder why no one posts. I agree. I love the ones who hope people will donate LMAO. As if!
