When the stolen CBS logo timeship went back in time, that guy altered history*. Team Lucy would've instantly then only known the universe where the Hindenburg successfully landed and blew up on departure.
Every time they go back in time, they need to do the opposite of what they know about the past because the guy with the stolen CBS logo timeship will have already changed the past.
*Alternatively, if the CBS logo timeship thief didn't change the past, then there's no reason to go back and try to stop his efforts.
Heck, why go back in time at all to "fix" anything if nothing for Lucy's timeline would change for her. It only changes if you are outside the timeline and come BACK to it. It's not like in her timeline (when history was changed) her mom all the sudden opened her eyes and said "Oh, huh...I'm better!" and Amy just went poof from existence.
Attention: Tonight I will attempt to travel back in time and change history. You'll know I've succeeded if Germany loses World War II and Wednesday comes after Tuesday.
The passenger manifest included Omar Bradley, soon to be Gen. Bradley. As we know, Bradley worked closely with Gen. George S Patton. Extrapolating a scenario in which Bradley is not in World War II, we might assume that Patton may have become supreme Cmdr. of the Allied forces. With that being said, Patton may have finished the job he had in mind after defeating the Nazis. That was to keep on going to Russia and take out the communist nation. This would have eliminated the Cold War.
It could also be extrapolated that China after watching this March into Russia and rebuild its economy may have figured it was better to join us than fight us. With us not spending all that money spying on the Soviet Union and Communist China which in theory would not exist, we would have moved into the 1940s and 50s with prosperity after institution of the Marshall plan. With us defeating Russia, and China out of the picture they would have experienced the same expansion of their economy as did Germany in postwar Europe. That would mean all the finest minds would be industrious due to more economic wealth globally. Hence, Lucy Preston's mother is well and not sick after Lucy's return. The cure for her malady obviously had been solved.
This seems to be the most logical plot. If they go in this direction I would not be surprised. If they don't go in that direction I would not be surprised either. But with the second episode dealing with Lincoln, I don't see expansion of the plot from episode one.
By the way the plot should have gone that their mission was to go back one day prior to the Hindenburg disaster upon takeoff and find out why the mothership arrived one day earlier. As you are totally correct.
Also for a historian who can seem to remember a literally forgotten news writer and photographer from that era, but couldn't remember that the Hindenburg had sliding windows in the observation lounge. They simply could've thrown the bomb out the window!
As for other posters who silly theory about jet fighters were written prior to the episode that we just saw even aired. A big fat holy cow! I'm a science fiction fan but I'm not back fanatical.
I'm hoping the writing gets a little better because this show could run a long time with a writing staff that is focused on one event for say at least a three episode arc maybe 4. But as I can see the trailers writing staff is not focused because we are headed to Ford theater for the assassination of Pres. Lincoln. How they intend to tie that with episode one, is beyond anything I can come up with for a scenario to bridge the storyline.
I have a feeling this show may not last because of this. At least with the old 1960s TV program the time tunnel they can get away with jumping from one place to another with happenstance because of the lack of control of the time tunnel operating equipment. This was the demise of that program. Lack of focus. Poor writing.
