First Paradox within 10 minutes

It doesn't upset me and I am going to watch this show every week,

But, if Bad Guys went back in time and changed something, before Mason started talking about how the present and reality would be different, it already would be different.

But that's time travel for you. Can't have a good plot and complete Logic.

Wonder how the next 32 minutes will be,

Thanks

Pretty much why I hate anything dealing with time travel.

reply

the thing with time travel is it takes time to happen.

so in the case of 'rewind' the base of ops was shielded by an energy field which protected the people inside from any time line change.

the same could apply to this show, the time capsule systems create a time bubble.

reply

It shouldn't take time to happen though... if it already happened then the changes would be instantaneous.

Yeah, time travel stories are hard to write well as anything but absurdist comedy. It's inevitable because any story with realistic, unrestricted, time travel will quickly end up as nuts as the Bill & Ted movies.

When you can break causality a dozen times an hour, it's damned hard to maintain a comprehensible plot. ;)

I love time travel, it's my favorite S/F genre. I'm going to give this one a chance. It's got a Jack Finney vibe going for it, which is a good thing.

The ONLY explanation - and it still defies logic - is that for some reason, the time line doesn't change until they return. This, while illogical, could be a "nod and wink" explanation. When our heroes came back, the Homeland lady stated the terrorists were also back in this current time. So maybe, just maybe, the changes don't take place until the time machine, with it's occupants, returns home.

But I rather think it would be instantaneous, as it was on CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER in Star Trek TOS. Bones jumped through the "Guardian of Forever", and Uhura stated that she had been talking to the ship and it suddenly went silent.

In that case, the 'explanation' allowing the story to continue was the landing party was somehow shielded from the changes in the timeline because of some proximity to the Guardian.

As you said, you can't have a good plot AND complete logic.

Time travel stories are both enjoyable, but it's also very easy to poke holes in these stories.

Thanks

That is a good way to describe the internal logic of the show. If they keep with their internal logic perfect,

It is easy to poke holes. They jump to mind. But I was amused by how quickly they did it.

I can know watch the series with your excellent justification

They go back in time in Supernatural but usually have angles to fix things

Thanks again

Trying to apply logic to an illogical idea (time-travel) is a defeatist affair, in an of itself.

Best thing to do is suspend disbelief for an hour, and just try to enjoy the show.
