Go back in time moments before theft?

If you have a time travel machine why not just go back in time to moments before the theft of the other time machine therefore stop the theft and prevent Garcia from ever going back in time?

Okay so just watched more and realized the answer. HOWEVER at this point wouldn't a better plan would be to get someone from a different time zone and let them stop the theft? My point is it seems very risky to send to groups of people back in time

Note that only the black guy was at risk of meeting himself. The marine and the girl had never set foot in the laboratory before in their lives.

Well, they were there right after the theft.

If they went back to just before the theft, and ended up chasing him and that chase ended up at the lab and lasted until after the theft, they ran the risk of running into themselves as they showed up.

But they were only brought there BECAUSE of the theft.

Even if your scenario happened, they were there in the past and a chase occurred--- the people in the lab would just say, "Hey, make sure not to bring in Lucy Preston or Wyatt Logan until after their FUTURE SELVES clear outta here!"

Ok, so they leave at 7:30 at night, and return to the area at 6:30. They are in pursuit, and end up in the area right around the lab at 7:15. So, the people in the lab say "make sure not to bring in Preston or Logan until after their FUTURE SELVES clear outta here."

They hold the 'past' versions in their vehicles in the parking lot, and their 'future' versions catch him in the lab at 7:45.

Now, they can escort them out of the building so that their past selves can go in and make their jump, right?

Except that they have created a paradox, since their past selves left at 7:30, and it's now 7:45. That means that their past selves did not get to make the time jump at the same time. That means that everything they did between jumping and stopping the theft will be different. They have effectively changed what they, themselves did...which is a problem.

NO-- they already explained that it's just physically impossible for anyone to exist simultaneously in two places at once AT ALL; Rufus explained that they tried to send someone back only a few years--- but only parts of him made it home.

Edit: here's the exact quote---

You can't go back to any time where you already exist, where you might meet a double of yourself. It is bad for the fabric of reality...

...We tried it once. The pilot came back, but not all of him.

Well, I'm editing my answer because, yes, he DOES seem to say the only problem results from meeting your past self. BUT.. the historian and the soldier were only recruited AFTER Flynn stole the time-ship.... so NO, if they went back five minutes before the theft, and shot Flynn, they would NOT meet themselves cuz their past selves wouldn't be anywhere near the lab.
