Throw the bomb out the damn window?
Why did they have to diffuse it?
shareLMAO That is what I was thinking. I assume he was concerned of collateral damage on the ground.

But, the ground below was an empty field. The rope holders only run onto the field whenever the blimp is landing.

Well, maybe if he had not wasted time fighting the other guy, then having to rush to defuse it with seconds left, he might have chucked it out a window at an earlier point?
shareThat's MUCH too logical/sensible for anyone associated with this mess to have thought of. 😀
shareNot a dramatic enough solution. I was waiting for the clock to stop at "007".

You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and YOU ... WILL ... ATONE!
Just a thought. Most likely he was worried that the concussion from the blast, or a piece of shrapnel from the bomb, might rupture the hydrogen bags and explode that way. Remember, the outer skin of the Hindenburg was made of fabric, as were the gas bags.
shareNothing in life or zeppelin wrangling is certain, but one thing I think is obvious is that when faced with a choice between having to quickly defuse a bomb one has never seen before, or tossing the bomb off the airship and hoping for the best (remember that the Hindenburg would be heading east toward the Atlantic Ocean), every sane, nonfictional person would choose the latter!
shareThere were people on the ground out there.
