I thought this series was rather clever that way - yes, many things were left unresolved, but we're left with the impression that nothing will EVER be resolved with Jean. We learn she's been doing this a loooong time, given the reveal that Melissa Saugrave is yet another of her victims.
That's why it's fitting to end with her smiling and looking smug. She lives for this crap. She's won.
