Do you just not pay attention to how the american media actually works?
A third rate olympic fencer was the most famous woman on the planet a couple months ago just because she wears a piece of religous gear that actually oppresses women.
And we're leading up to The World Series.
Apparently you're new to American Hype. A lot of things that might arguably be the (superlative) in the US are said to be the (superlative) in the World!!!
....we're just that important ;)
Stop being so critical. It's a made up story

To be fair, in today's age of social media, 24/7 news cycles, amateur blogs and chat boards, I think any person, man or woman, to be the first to do just about anything will have their 15 minutes of. Depending on the resulting hype, or endorsements, it could be well over 5 minutes and reach worldwide proportions.
Even if you don't care about baseball, you've probably heard of it, and if you've heard of it, you'd definitely hear of the first woman player. Especially if she's endorsed by nike, or Gatorade, or other sport-related merch companies.
Even with social media, I really doubt even the first female major league baseball player would end up the most famous woman on the planet. Not even for 15 minutes. Mostly because not that many people outside of the US seems to be very interested in baseball? Where I'm from, we're exposed to loads of american culture but I doubt the majority of people here would be able to tell you what baseball is more than an american sport that involves a ball. Maybe the first female baseball player would be mentioned on a sport segment here after the news, but likely it would only get a secondlong-mention and I doubt it would be something that people here would think or talk much about. Not enough for her to become a wellknown name that everybody knows. There's just not enough interest.
shareI know that there is a game called baseball, basically because of some US movies like the one that says "If you built it he will come" or something.
I never understood (or care) about the rules. For a European aren't THAT clear. It's not Basketball where the ball gets in the basket.
I don't know a single name of a team (maybe Yankees ?) or a player (I think M.Monroe was married with someone well known).
I also don't know /craps/ (the dices game) and that is a very good example. In the movies you see someone roll the dices and a bunch of people around him cheering. You just get along. You NEVER care about the game and its complicated rules, and certainly you don't give a rat's ass about who is the best player in craps.
And as far as I know until recently US didn't care about soccer, a sport that I'm well aware of. I remember movies and episodes of TV shows where the father was furious for his son not caring about baseball and to want to play soccer instead (a lame game that HE couldn't understand).
As far of Nike and such, their advertisements aren't including baseball in any of their European spots.
Finally you can check numerous maps and stats about the popularity of Baseball such as this map. (Yellow for baseball).

I don't think anyone other the Americans cares or give a fck about baseball.
It might not be true, but the first female major league player is still a freaking big deal. In the context of this show's universe, yes, she is the most famous woman on the planet. The writers like to make Jackie Robinson comparisons with Ginny, but it's really a mole hill compared to the mountain of crap Jackie had to deal with.
But I love that Ginny doesn't want any of it. She just wants to play ball.
