How does anyone keep playing catcher for years & years?

I mean, being in that bent position for hours & hours & hours at a time?? Only frogs can do that without damage to their bodies. I can only imagine how retired, long-time catchers suffer.

It's a position that gets little respect and yet it is one of the hardest positions on the team. The catcher is involved in every play and also is the guy responsible for calling all the plays/pitches. The pitcher may shake his head and brush some off but the catcher controls the pitches for the entire game, not the pitcher. The catcher is secret behind the great pitchers. Yes, I am the mother of a catcher but considering that no one ever wants to catch, it is the most powerful position in baseball and catchers are often great hitter, too. They have to be because their knees hurt so much they cannot get to first unless the hit a triple. (Catcher humor!!)

So hard on their knees/legs! Your son must have to work out constantly to keep those muscles in shape. I admire him very much.

As another Catcher Mom, I have to disagree --- it's not one of the hardest positions, it IS the hardest position. ;)

There is a reason so many MLB catchers go on to manage -- they position fielders, know the oppositions' hitters, hold down the running game, and already play coach, Mom, and psychologist to the Highly Delicate Creatures known as pitchers.

They don't - these days the learn dual position s at the beginning of their careers. They waited too long to try and teach Johnny Bench third and the outfield. He was horrible at both positions and his legs wore out. Probably, the Yankees were the first team to try and save a catcher's legs when they sent Yogi Berra to right field. But they should've taught him the position sooner. Joe Torre was a catcher, but he learned early had to play first and third. Manny Sanguillan learned how to play first and Brian McCann learned the position this past season. Dale Murphy, Andy Van Slyke and Bryce Harper all began as catchers too, until they were converted to the outfield and became All Stars.

Mike Lawson should've started playing first or in the outfield a lot sooner and then his legs wouldn't be in such bad shape either. Levon should do the same thing too - start learning at least one more position so he can give his legs a break. He should learn first and alternate with Mike. Then Mike can save what's left of his legs and Levon can keep his from getting severely damaged like Mike.

Interesting; I'm sure you're right.
