Did I miss something in the show. Why were they waiting until after the game to complete the trade. It seems like they should have announced the trade and send Mike on his way to his new team if they agreed to a deal. Why let him remain with the team during the game, demand that he doesn't play, but still have him fully at the Padres disposal if the Cubs were really interested in completing the trade.
I just didn't see a reason to wait unless the Cubs' GM wanted to test the Padres ability to act in good faith for future dealings.
I think the problem was the 3 Million Dollars. The Cubs wanted San Diego to pay that much of Mike Lawson's contract and the guy running the team was balking at the deal. When he refused to pay the 3 Million dollar portion of Lawson's contract, the trade fell through.
Had I been the writer, I would've written something completely different with more drama. When the phone rings, Lawson answers, talks to Oscar and then looks at Ginny and says "The trade's been made". Then his car pulls up and Ginny's left standing there in shock as the episode ends.
This weeks episode opens up with him reporting to the Cubs and working out with them. But there's a little matter of the team physical. We see Lawson being examined bye the Cubs team physician's and then go back to Ginny, Amelia and the sports bar. Then it's time for Lawson to play his first game as a Cub - but his name isn't in the line up. Mike asks why he isn't playing. There's a grim look on there managers face. He tells Mike "We just got the doctor's report. Because of your back and knees, you failed the team physical and can't be cleared to play. It also means the trade has been voided".
Seriously, Pitch needs you in the writers' room. Your idea is way better than what was written. Not to mention, this is now the second idea I've seen on this board regarding the trade that exceeds what actually went down.
