Why are strong female leads seldom written without them being nasty?

I"m sorry but how exactly is Michonne bitchy now? You can't put her in the same boat as Olivia freaking Pope , SHe lives in a post apocalyptic world where if you don't fight and be tough YOU DIE... lol every woman on that show has to be a little tougher
