Disappointing as Carmageddon Reincarnation
I just saw it, after getting NetFlix back.
I'm... disappointed to say the least. I enjoyed the original. I even enjoyed the ones in between of them, when it was just autodueling-based. It was b-grade, but enjoyable b-grade. But this took the camp almost too far. The production values in mid-90s FMV video game cut scenes were better.
1. The cars looked terrible. We've had decades of cars doled up to look like death on wheels, and we get these? They look too similar, and too tapered. Little creativity was put into them, especially the self-driving car. Minerva's car looks more like a Lego spaceship. Let's not forget the original DR had a Nazi V-1 shaped car, and didn't care.
2. The acting was a bit overbaked. Jed was annoying from the first minute. When there's any attempt to develop a character, the movie is too far long into it. Yes, everyone's obnoxious on TV, and the citizens are caricatures of the ills of society.
3. They tried to cram too much of what the future would look like into too little of the film. There's genetically modified people, nobody with jobs(due to automation?) and about 20 other dystopia tropes that's thrown at us.
4. The video game series Carmageddon easily was influenced from the original movie. I was hoping there would be some reciprocal nod, even if it was just for a second, in this. Like "Hey, thanks man", but I couldn't find it. Sadly, nothing. It would have redeemed this movie just a tiny bit. A bit disappointing since Carmageddon(with it's paper-thin storyline) had a bit in common with DR2050's world. Really, they should have given some creative control to Stainless Software. It would have helped.
That's just my two cents. I tried not to see it with Carmageddon-colored glasses, or even the original's glasses, but it just fell flat. It could have done so much better.
