New footage was absolutly gorgeous,however
I truly enjoy BBCs many nature documentaries, and found PE2 to be spectacular, save for what appear to be CGI shots, and reuse of footage from PE1 and other BBC docus.
I am certain one aerial shot of an elephant trudging through the desert was CGI or a composit shot,as it looked to be "floating" just above the surface. This is probably not visible on normal size screens, but my 123" showed it clearly.
And then there is the use of older material. For something that has been labelled a better show than the first PE, i dont think so.. Both the desert and grassland episodes contained whole segments that were either re-edits from PE1 or scene for scene same footage, especially the water hole in kalahari is the exact same footage found in BBC Africa from 2013,and the wolf hunting reindeer in grasslands in PE2 is the from the same footage from PE1.
I dont like if nature documentaries are begining to use CGI to alter reality or add/remove stuff to scenes, just because the shoots were difficult. Biggest problem i would gather is actually finding places that look wild these days, with no signs of human encroachment, and here i still think CGI should not be used,as it paints a false image of the state of the planet, which is dire to say the least.
Other than that,i was amazed at some of the footage, the harris hawk sequence, the meadow harvest mouse sequence and some of the jungle shoots were absolutly fantastic.
All in all another hit from BBC,i just wish they had edited it differently in some sequences, and that it was longer. But i suspect a lot of the footage shot will be coming in future documentaries.
Now please give me an updated Blue Planet,i wouldnt mind a segment for segment reshoot in pristine HD. As a scuba diver myself, that show stands as the pinnacle for me.
Oh,and the post-production added foley audio is also very good and adds a level of immersion seldom felt in documentaries.
