why would anyone bother making a sitcom with a laugh track nowadays?

Seriously, that's like signing your own death sentence as a series.

There isn't a single quality sitcom currently on television that has a laugh track, and every single sitcom to come out the past few years that contained it was canceled.

Here's why:

Big Bang Theory (10th Season, Oct 27 2016):

3.4/13 18-49 share, 14.31 viewers

Well, even that one hasn't been funny in years now.

Not exactly something to emulate.

How much revenue is generated by a sitcom isn't predicated on your personal preferences.

Eh, that doesn't invalidate my point that none of the new sitcoms with a laugh track succeed. .

BBT ... they have a live audience. I'm not sure if TGI is using a live audience or a laugh track. Either way some shows do well with it... some are horrible. This one, where most of the show is shot on sets makes more sense to have them. Shows where they are on location all the time shooting don't make sense to have them.

Still, BBT is an audience. TGI may be as well.

Most of the traditional multi-cam sitcoms with "laugh tracks" (The Big Bang Theory) have a live studio audience. Single camera sitcoms (Modern Family) don't have a typical set and no audience, therefore no laughter. An example of a real laugh track would be The Flintstones.
