I wanted to hate it...
But 20 minutes in, its not horrible.
Disclaimer: not a millennial
I'm 60 and it was MUCH better than I expected it to be.
shareOk. I'll cross the line. I kind of liked it - enough that I set the DVR for next week.
shareYeah, I'm going to give it a fair chance. I thought the pilot was pretty decent... though the canned laughter is really killing it for me. Can you imagine watching Community with a laugh track added?
shareI also wanted to hate it and wasn't disappointed.
As muxje said, the laugh track put me off. But it was far from bearing sole responsibility for this horribly dated show.
Take away the fact that the culture clash/generation gap jokes centre on a 21st century phenomenon and this could be from the 1950s.
Shame on Stephen Fry for taking the cheque by the way. He doesn't need the cash but gave up QI for this?
It's not bad....but it's not all that good, either. They played some on the angle of millennials, work ethic, and the nature of producing real work; I hope they explore that more. But it seemed that all the funny parts were already shown in the commercials for the show weeks ago, and there wasn't anything terribly new in the rest of the episode. I'll give it more time.
I liked it. The half hour seemed to go by quickly, not the case with a dud show. The complaints I've seen so far are from younger viewers, and the millenials took some shots. But McHale's character took quite a few, as well. It might be that millenials feel that older people who aren't keeping up deserve derision. All of the cuts at both sides were exaggerated, of course, because it's a sitcom.
The other criticism repeatedly made is that the characters are stereotypes. Since this was just the pilot, there's little room to develop the characters. I think, with time, this could be a keeper. I doubt it will live up to the quirky originality of Community, but that would be too much to hope for. I'm recording the series to see how it goes.
.....
I was the kid next door's imaginary friend
I'm in.
I'll give it a fair shot for all the reasons MarlinBrawndo stated. I hope it turns out good.
I liked the pilot, but the second episode is making me think I should delete the season pass from my DVR.
shareThe only question I have on this thing is did they use the office set from Suddenly Susan for this show? It sure looks like it.
