KJ is funny. He had some good actors/characters around him in KOQ, thus the success. This show has NOBODY in a supporting role with any ability. The acting is so bad it is almost funny, but not quite.
I would say my memory is not what it used to be. But I don't remember what my memory used to be.
James and the Chore Weasal, Blake, carried that episode. Presumably Blake was a one time character.
James was on screen almost the entire episode, he was only absent for about 90 seconds during the scene where the mother and daughter grill Chale about what Kevin has been up to (for the record, I really found that scene funny)
The other daughter must have been on screen for less than 2 minutes across 3 episodes and had possibly had about 2 lines. Why bother with her, unless they have more family centric episodes down the line. I guess there might be episodes where the friends don't appear.
I've been vocal about Gary Valentine, I think he blows and he is getting a free ride thanks to nepotism. Cut his scenes so far out of all the episodes and it wouldnt make a lick of difference.
I really don't have a problem with Kevin James playing the same character... that's what he does well. It was the same with Bob Newhart on his two hit shows. The one thing that made "Newhart" a success was the supporting cast. Like you said, KOQ had a great support cast, but this one definitely falls short. Kevin isn't interesting enough to hold the show by himself.
If we must compare with King of Queens, it took them a while for the support to kick in. Obviously they ditched Sara Spooner because they just didn't have anything for her to do. Maybe that will happen here.
It looks like they have already made one small change. I saw a preview for the next episode and it looks like Kendra (the older daughter) gets a job in the Pizza place that we have seen Kevin and his friends use in the last two episodes. In the Pilot she worked in a diner and I thought they may use that as a 'hangout' setting, but it seems they prefer the pizza place, so having Kendra switch jobs could be a way of getting her more involved.
From the little we have seen of her, I like her character, so I am happy to see more stories based around her. I think we need to see a bit more of Chale and her together to really understand why she fell for him. At face value, they do look a bit mismatched as a couple, so it would be good to explore what makes them tick.
I think for me, Chale is going to make or break my enjoyment of the show. He could either because so annoying it puts me right off or he could become the unsung hero and be absolutely hilarious. I think we have seen snippets of it going either way so far. He was really annoying in Episode 2 when he was crying at movies and being way over sensitive. But I thought he was funny in Episode 3 when he was the first to discover Kevin using the Chore Weasel and tried to play along with Kevin until the girls broke him.
I'd like them to lose Valentine, but that ain't happening any time soon as he is getting a free pass by being a family member. Maybe they could lose the bearded friend, who doesn't really seem to offer anything different to the others in the group.
Yeah, the supporting cast is definitely one of the show's biggest weaknesses at this point. However, they all may just need sometime to really get their stuff together. If you watch the first four episodes of The King of Queens the entire cast didn't really reach their peak abilities yet.
