Kevin's attitude and general demeanor are very off-putting in the show. He seems like just a huge ass. Not really very likeable at all. On King of Queens he was basically the same but more likeable for some reason.

Maybe because he was playing a younger character. You see them learning life and making mistakes. As an older " retired " guy, the same mistakes now look like informed choices. That's how I've thought it to be.

That's actually a good analogy. He went from us saying "Oh, those poor kids...they'll figure it out" to "A man his age should know better...what an idiot."

He's a New Yorker playing a New Yorker. It fits him and them perfectly.

He may have come off more likable because he was always at the business end of Leah Remini's adversarial approach to playing Carrie. Maybe we were just more inclined to sympathize with him.
