Wife, friends and kids will get show cancelled

This couldve been a hit show if they picked a better cast

reply

It won't happen, but they need to drop Gary Valentine.

Not one of his scenes so far has been funny or necessary. They could edit out every scene he has been in and it wouldn't make a scrap of difference.

reply

I actually like Gary Valentine's character on the show; just not a big fan of the show itself. As a huge fan of KoQ, I have to say that Kevin Can Wait does not have the same charisma. Jerry Stiller's interactions with the cast (especially Patton Oswalt) gave KoQ a layer that Kevin Can Wait just doesn't have.

reply

He isn't needed at all. He only ever seems to turn up at the pizza place to fill the table, but he really adds little.

reply

Dead on, Arthur Spooner was a riot. You never knew what was going to come out of his mouth.

reply

Absolutely! I once read an article quite a few years back where Keven James explained that he had "begged Jerry Stiller not retired but instead join the cast of King of Queens". Keven told him that he believed "the show won't be successful without him". I think Keven thought this new show could be successful on his own merits... he made a big mistake! He should've humbled himself and found a well established/liked, funny actor to join the cast. He has the ability to be funny but he needs a good supporting actor to build from... this show doesn't have that and his brother (although has his funny moments) isn't enough. Not to mention... I find his wife stupid as well as his boring unfunny friends.

reply

I fully agree! I truly enjoyed Arthur's rants on just about anything! From his rant about Raymond Burr's "best" films at the video store to his half-brother "Skitch" to even being "held hostage" in Carrie and Doug's basement...Jerry Stiller was a true gem in that show!

reply

Yeah, it's too bad.

reply

It also needed a better and more original premise than this bland, Tim Allen-rejected "wacky father with wacky friends with down to earth wife and boyfriend of daughter he doesn't like" recycled tripe.

reply

Kevin James' character is out if control in this one and he's not likeable. In King of Queens he had the perfect foil in Carrie. She was a clever put down artist and she kept him in line. The wife on his new show is a pathetic pushover who relates to the childlike Kevin as if she's his mother. Train wreck.

reply

Change the title. CBS just picked it up for a full season.
No reason given.

reply

I really like the wife. I like the rest of the cast for the most part. I haven't really warmed up to a couple of the friends though. They can add new people and give the cast a little overhaul if need be. If you look at most of the sitcoms in the past that were huge hits, the first season usually blows. It takes a little time to figure it out and find the right mix of characters and get everything to gel.

reply

The first season is often the lesser when you re-watch an old show because it often takes time to hit a stride, but if a show just isn't good people don't stick around for an entire season.

reply

I don't feel that way at all. I think it is very good and I enjoy it very much

reply

Agree. Look no further that the first Senfelds. Sometimes it takes awhile to develop the characters and get in a groove. I do wonder if they will need to lose a character or 2 though. It almost seems like too much with the kids and all of the friends.

reply

Keep Kevin of course, along with the oldest daughter and her fiancé. The other kids need to go and the wife needs to be replaced. I just can't see Kevin married to anyone other than Carrie

reply

Have Kevin meet a new woman and run off with her to Las Vegas and leave his current wife, friends, kids (and oldest kid's annoying boyfriend) behind. Have him start working at an interesting job in a casino, introduce interesting friends, employ new writers, and then you'll have a good show on your hands!

reply

In other words... cancel the show and have him wait a couple years for someone to write a show about him working in a casino?

reply

Jim Breuer as the priest is pretty funny though 😀

The ex cop friends are all losers. I hate making obvious comparisons with KOQ, but it's inevitable.

At first, this was my impression.

Goody-Deacon - not just because of him being the token black, but he seems the most sensible and settled character. He also seems to be the one most likely to put Kevin in his place, much like Deacon could do with Doug sometimes.

Mott-Spence - a bit weird and geeky

Duffy-Richie - wise cracking, similar broad New Yawk accent

Kyle-Danny - obviously both played by Valentine, both losers, largely because Valentine has no talent or range to play a more diverse character.

The disappointment for me is Duffy, because they keep writing in lines about him living with and being dependant on his mother, which makes him more like Spence. Yet Mott still feels more of a Spence type loser dweeb, although he is married with 7 kids, which makes him the pussy whipped family man.

The biggest concern, I can't really envisage any of them as great cops.

reply

heh, if you just told me the names Goody, Mott, Duffy, and Kyle, I'd have no idea what television show they're even on. That's how big an impression these characters have made on me.
