Remember when sit-coms were funny?

I would be surprised if this turkey makes it past Thanksgiving. The plot is bad, the writing is bad, character development is bad. The lighting seems good.

It's already been picked up for the first season so we have 22 episodes to look forward to.

I wish they would retool (retool? I'll retool you!) the show by adding some funny characters and dropping some lame ones and improving the writing, but as long as it's television's #1 new comedy!, that'll sadly never happen.

If he ever does another sitcom, hopefully it'll be something original and funny and not another Tim Allen reject.

reply

Yes. They don't make sitcoms like they used too. 

Well, CBS ordered a full season of 22 episodes last month. I guess you're going to be surprised.

My wife and I look at each other every time they play the laugh track, like, what did we miss, because nothing was funny. Maybe if they got new writers and production staff and oh, say, a plot it might be more watchable.

reply

I'm going to be viewing the first episode soon, please tell me you're joking about it being a laughter track. And if it is one, tell me it's not as horrifically bad as the one for The Odd Couple.

...then whoa, differences...

You know when you drive by a car accident and you shouldn't gawk - but you can't look away? Anyway, enjoy your first episode.

reply

I saw, and heard. I can't say the laughter track was as bad as The Odd Couple, but it's still there sucking. Thanks for your good will, however I did not enjoy the episode. I only got halfway and gave up because it's just the same last-decade-or-so generic slop re-warmed. Shame, I loved KOQ and still do.

I tried using closed captions to avoid the laugh track but it didn't help much:

"Kevin, you're not going to eat both those pizzas, are you?"
{laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter}

"Yes I am. I only had 7 burgers for lunch."
{laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter}

"But, your youngest 2 kids who aren't on the show anymore might want a slice, too"
{laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter}

"Shutty!"
{laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter laughter}

Your post was funnier than half of the episodes 😄

reply

Ha, I once made a very similar post about that 'Cristela' show which was just embarrassing in this respect. It's a cringeworthy formula.

Yeah you're right and everyone else is wrong. You win.

The first step is admitting it.

Modern PC culture of the 2000s doesn't really allow for funny traditional sitcoms. Also, modern technology and convenience inhibits good comedy writing as well. You just can't pull off the setups and situations any longer that were the bread and butter for sitcom hilarity.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

Sitcoms don't need to be (and hopefully shouldn't be) wacky and slapstick. That was I Love Lucy and Three's Company. Thankfully those days are gone.

This show KCW needs better writers plain and simple. Funnier situations, funnier jokes, funnier characters. Other than that, it's great.

New show runner is taking over so there will likely be changes of some sort.

That last line was f*&ing hilarious!
