Missed one bit -- does anyone know?

They keep trying to contact a guy at NSA, and keep striking out. Finally they get through to him though. I missed how or why they were finally able to do so. Can anyone fill me in?

Somebody passed the guys extension number to the American based (Rhys Ifans) reporter.

OK, thanks. Does anyone have any more detail, such as which someone and why?

From the film we don't know passed on the extension number. We do know that the reporter could not get past the switch board without it. Someone rang the London office anonymously who then passed the message on. I assumed it was his retired American intelligence contact but I don't think we're supposed to know - maybe it's still a secret?
