All These Years I Waited For A Live Action Archie Series...
And they create Supernatural-Lite in Riverdale. Why couldn't this just be a COMEDY?!

A comedy wouldn't happen. Even before this landed on CW, it wast pitched on FOX as Supernatural show. Why would CW want a comedy? They have dreadful ratings on their network. FOX wanted it to be a Supernatural show. CW wanted it to be a teen soap. The other networks don't want anything to do with it after it bombed terrible for them in the past like that one on NBC.

Yup and how long has it been since an Archie live action happened? None of the big 4 networks are interested with the old Archie except maybe as cartoons in daytime.
shareKinda makes me long for that Archie movie featuring Corey Haim as Archie that was always announced in Comic Scene Magazine that never got made.

It's also because the Archie Horror line ("Afterlife with Archie" and "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina") have been surprisingly popular and well received, which seems to have reviatalised interest in the brand, somewhat. The show's creator/pilot writer was the guy who created "Afterlife..."

Because darker shows tend to do better on the CW. If it went the comedy route, it would face the same fate as the three other CW comedy's (Jane the Virgin, No Tomorrow, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) = horrible ratings.
Besides, the show is created by the current COO and head comic writer for the Archie comics so it's not like he won't know how to handle the characters.
Archie having an affair with Miss Grundy just makes me feel all kinds of unsettled. I can't read my old Archie digests the same anymore. Its funny in a way though.

I agree with the OP. If they wanted to make some dark, gritty, teenage series, then they should've just done that & made some dark, gritty, original teenage series.
This is a dark, gritty, teenage series that's wearing an Archie costume. I know that people on the board have said that this show is primarily aimed at the younger demographic, but they clearly want older people to watch the series too as well by having the series wear the costume of a 77 year old wholesome comic book franchise which of whom many generations had grown up with. I don't blame the fans who grew up with this 77 year old wholesome comic book franchise for being totally confused and disappointed. It's like a bait & switch in a way.
This would work so much better as some one-off SNL skit or an April Fools joke rather than an actual series.
