What's the consensus?
Did we all like it or not?
shareI was pleasantly surprised by how into this I got after the first episode. The original thought of this show sounded dumb and then it's like why are these characters even the ones from Archie comics? Yet here I am saying I actually enjoyed the show. I have very little to watch anymore so my standards are pretty low but I'm gonna give this season a shot to see where it goes.
I like the mystery who dunnit kind of shows like The Killing or True Detective and I also like Supernatural another CW show so I'm not expecting it to be this out of this world great mystery/thriller.
I'd probably give the pilot a 6.5-7 outta 10
I liked it very much. I was glad that I did like it so much. It's nowhere near perfect, but nothing is. I'm going to continue to watch it until I'm no longer entertained.
There is no Flash without Iris West.
First, I have never read the comics nor do I know what the original story of these characters is about, other than a Betty/Veronica/Archie love triangle, so I am not judging this show based on its faithfulness to the original material. So far this show is, let's just say acceptable.
The positive : the crime angle is a nice addition and is in my opinion more interesting than what goes on at school. Similarly, I'm interested to know what is going to happen between Veronica's mother and Archie's father and what exactely is the backstory between them.
The negative : I could complain about all the usual teenage drama clichés (the new girl in town trying to make her way in her new school's social hierarchy, the good girl trying to break free from an overbearing parent, the gay best friend banging some football player in the closet, the social outcast and his blog about life in his boring town, the bitchy cheerleader, etc.), but right now my biggest problem is Archie. As a main character, he is to me the least engaging of them all. He just feels like such a Mary Sue. He's good looking, he's the conjunction of the two main teenage girl dream guy (the jock and the sensitive artist) and he's living the teenage boy fantasy of sleeping with the hot young teacher. Is there anything this guy cannot do ? Well, answering my own question, yes, there is, and that would be to think rationally about his future. Seriously, he wants to throw away a chance at a good education and a business to play some mediocre songs and fancy himself an artist?
From a basic storytelling perspective (not counting the credibility of the show based on its faithfulness to the source material), this was a big problem I had with the pilot.
The problem being that well, I didn't really like Archie himself. Protagonists do not have to be likable by any means, but they need to at least have some empathetic qualities. (Although for this type of CW show Archie should have been likable, this isn't some deep, subversive character study like some think it is).
Is there any possible way anyone can really empathize with Archie in the pilot? Wanting to ditch all his hopeful prospects of a family business, varsity football, and two hot girls for a music career isn't empathy....I don't know what it is lol. Its just stuff. Stuff for the show to do.
Liked it enough to give it a few episodes. Will depend a lot on whether the writers/producers/etc try to focus all their energy on being "edgy" or whether they actually work on developing the characters. As some have mentioned, this is not "edgy", even if that was the intent. Edgy has been done and done better. This is a drama, teen or otherwise, with a little serial mystery thrown in. Dramas succeed because the audience invests in the characters in some fashion. Thus far, the characters lack dimension but have some potential to become interesting. Time will tell.
