For us fans who have been reading the comics all of our lives, yes it is a big deal. Josie's my favorite and she's a white redhead. She's not black. She never was. Valerie is black. There are other black characters in Archie Comics. This is complete CRAP.

Fans of classic material often think of every detail about the character. I mean people have bitched about a character being the wrong hair color.
Its hardly racist. And nobody would call a black person racist for complaining about a white actor playing a black character.

I don't think it's any biggie. Sure, in my mind I've always seen the characters as they are in the comics but honestly, this series will benefit from giving us actors that don't look exactly like their comic book counterparts. Part of what is keeping me from really getting into this is that the comics had grown so worn out and tired. Stuff like Afterlife with Archie helped a lot, but the Archie world is just too overly familiar to be very surprising. Giving us some new looks for characters would help a lot, especially if the actors fit the way the character is written in the series.
