Why is Hollywood obsessed with making things so 'Dark?'

I remember when the Archie Comics were good fun fluff. But now the only way to get the attention of an audience is to make things 'dark' and 'disturbing.' Like the movie Maleficent.

Good question, I was making a similar observation to my wife a couple of days ago. Not just this show, look how the rather campy Batman of the 1960s has been turned into very dark themes. Look at Superman vs Batman. Look at a number of TV shows, very dark themes.

I think it is just a reflection of market research, the producers of movies and shows want to make money so they deliver what they think will sell. "Dark themes" sells, it is a reflection of a segment of our society, the younger segment, enjoying being in a darker frame of mind. It is not a good trajectory for societies in general.

Because Hollywood thinks dark and serious automatically = edgy and deep. Its been going on for a few years now.

Luckily it has kind of winded down and there are more movies and TV shows focused more on fun and entertaining than dark and depressing.

Because to make it more real it needs to be turned dark and ugly because such is life which is unfair not a fairy tale. Reality is dark.

Because they want to make money. Nothing deeper than that. End of story.

Post 9/11 cinema and television. The heroes on tv are bad, or bad guys: Jack Bauer, Walter White, Jamie Lannister, Saul Goodman, The Punisher, Norman Bates, etc.

Look at the Dark Knight as the blue print that current comic movies are trying to match. As a country we want bad guys who cross lines. We dont want our Archie as a good wholesome boy. We want an Archie who bangs his teacher and is a hearth throb. Compare 90s teen shows to 13 Reasons why. It's just the mood the country has been in for 16 years. Look who is President.
