Prior to seeing the ending, I was kinda thinking Cory was going to just bound the guard and tossed him off to become lunch for the cougars?
Would have been more plausible deniability for his death, and still been a nice payback way to go.

Well, by the time he is found on the moutaintop - all tracks will be gone and they can conclude that he got lost whilst escaping and froze to death.

Bare feet would have been a red flag that he didn't simply get lost.

When Cory was stalking him I did think the mountain lion was going to pounce on him.
