Can't agree with your "A little to work with" comments about Elizabeth Olsen's character. Her role looks realistic to me- show us how an ordinary FBI agent became an extraordinary survivor. And I think Elizabeth Olsen handled it flawlessly. It sounds like you are expecting more bad-ass action or more soul and emotion from her character, as if there aren't enough. Probably, you were distracted by her beauty and ignored them.

I'm not sure how her character was "realistic" or why you think my negative opinion of her role was because I was "distracted by her beauty" (?).

Thanks for reading my review, though.

I was joking about you "distracted by her beauty" because I can't find in your article any reason that explains why you think her character was "embarrassingly inept". In no circumstance we have seen her falling behind any male law enforcement officer, right?

I think her role looks real because in real life people from big cities like her know little about what's going on in Indian reservations, especially about how security firm run by special forces army veteran could be involved. From memory (I watched "Wind River" at a film festival last year), Olsen's character couldn't even find her way into a car-park at the start of the film and directed the local police into a trap at the climax of the film ... Renner's character had to bail her out on both occasions.

Her character never had a moment where she adapted to her environment or added anything to the investigation besides her FBI credentials.

Just my opinion, though.

Agreed! She couldn't find the police station, couldn't lead the investigation and walked straight into that trap at the end (only to be saved by Renner's random hunter guy).

The film tried too hard to make her seem out of her depth and ended up making her look stupid.

It hadn't occurred to me how similar these two Taylor Sheridan movies are

It almost seems pointless to rehash the whole "ambitious yet out of her depth Federal agent teams up with badass, mysterious, rugged manly man" plotline.

I came into this movie with high hopes, because I'm a fan of Jeremy Renner and liked Sheridan's Sicario and Hell or High Water. And I wouldn't say this movie was bad by any means, but it was pretty "meh". Felt like it ended in the second act or something. It needed an extra twist IMO

It made me wonder how many fresh ideas Taylor Sheridan has as a writer.

As I mentioned in my review, Renner didn't really connect with me in "Wind River" ... he was a replacement for Chris Pine, and it felt like he didn't quite fit comfortably in the role.

I thought Renner was excellent in an understated role. According to the IMDB trivia section, he was the first choice for the role, but was unavailable, so Chris Pine was chosen. He was a replacement for Renner, not the other way around. When Renner was freed up, he was given the role, as originally intended.
