Corey Hawkins' "Gender Neutral" Look. WTF? Should Have Been Idris Elba!

With his trademark shaped and plucked eyebrows, Corey Hawkins is really working the "gender neutral" market and is totally unsuited as the new "Black Jack Bauer".

In fact, Corey looks more like a Hollywood Hair Stylist than a highly trained Spec Ops soldier!

It's sad the producers didn't choose a more believable black actor to play the lead role. Idris Elba should have been the logical and best choice. Equally, Omari Hardwick (James 'Ghost' St. Patrick from "Power") could have carried this iconic role off perfectly.

Someone really screwed up big time, and I'm certain it will impact on the ratings.

I agree OP. It was one of the many issues of this mediocre episode.

reply

You mean superb episode headed by a fine cast. There fixed it for you.

reply

Yep the OP is on the money about both Idris and Omari and has a damn good selection choice.

The lead actor is like 6'1. Idris Elba is 6'2 1/2. Not too big of a difference. Kiefer Sutherland is 5'9 1/2.

lot more hefty

The defenders of this new lead actor are amongst some of the most inarticulate and illiterate, convincingly uneducated idiots I've ever seen.

reply

Idris Elba is 44, they wanted someone fresh and young otherwise...hell they might have just stuck with 50 year old Kiefer or got Roger Moore perhaps to play the central character? [/sarcasm]

reply

"Gender neutral"? What does that even mean? I'm pretty sure this would be news to most fans.

Others are right, Idris Elba is too tall and hefty for this role. Look at Jack Bauer-- hardly tall and intimidating, and yet he's the standard against which all heroes of 24 will be measured. Same with this character Carter: not too tall, doesn't attract a lot of attention to himself, can blend in with any crowd. Plus, his medium size means he can't rely on brute strength when dealing with the bad guys, and makes it all the more important for him to have ninja skills and MacGyver-like ingenuity to get himself out of a jam.

Sorry that you feel so strongly about this ("Hollywood hair stylist"? "impact on ratings"?) but I have the feeling you're in the minority on this one.

reply

Too tall and hefty??? What the fck does that even mean... You want a runt at CTU.

reply

Agreed!!! If they really wanted to kick ass with a black lead than Idris Elba would've been the first who's door I would have kicked down to get, this Corey isn't right for 24 he should be co hosting America's next top model with Tyra Banks while hissing at the female models with his hands on his hips.

LOL

As I was watching, all I was thinking was "Idris Elba" would have been badass.

Idris Elba doesn't look like an Everyman. And for the record, Corey Hawkins is as tall as--if not taller than--Elba.

(And before anyone says "the main character of 24 is supposed to be a hero," let's remember that Jack Bauer didn't look like a hero either.)

Corey doesn't exactly look like a man at all lol! I know plenty of young black men and none of them look as otherworldly (to put it politely) as Corey.

reply

well he's always great in everything - but does he honestly seem like a talent who would signup for the umpteenth reboot of a tired TV action series right when he's so sought after?

reply

First, I have to admit that I've liked the pilot episode way more than I was expecting.

That being said, I have to agree with the OP about the new lead.

His plucked eyebrows do make him look less masculine and therefore, IMO, less appropriate for an action hero.

reply

I think he has effeminate mannerisms as well. I don't care one way or the other, but Hawkins is definitely not your traditional masculine action star. I'm sure that's what they were going for. Will that sustain my interest long term? We'll see.

reply

Totally spot on.

I have this gut feeling Corey Hawkins is going to be a "politically correct" CTU agent (who moisturizes)

Unfortunately, the days of Jack using creative techniques to get terrorists to talk look like they are long gone.....

reply

He just looks weird. Even his brother on the show would have been a much better choice.

reply

I thought that too. The brother's intense stare was actually coming right through my screen. Wouldn't want that guy mad at me.

+1 for Idris

He would have been believable at least
