Rita Moreno's Accent

Her accent is horrible and grating at times. It reminded me of something and I couldn't quite figure it out until now. It reminds me of the times on the George Lopez show with the father-in-law character who was from Cuba. George would imitate him sometimes and really lay it on thick, and that's how her accents sounds to me.

What can one expect of Norman Lear? Ironically he is depicted a liberal, but throughout the years, he did more to hammer in negative stereotypes than practically anyone else on TV. Who can for instance forget George Jefferson "cooning" on TV? Rita Moreno's accent is the latest in his use of heavy handed stereotypes. First off, that's not a Cuban accent, it's a generic "latino" accent and second of all, its cringeworthy bad!

In the 1976 film The Ritz Rita Moreno plays lounge singer named Googie Gomez. She's pretty much doing the exact same accent for this show. In fact this character is like the elderly version of that character.
