Terrible Job on Timeline

Love the show and look forward to more seasons, but the timelines are way off on the show. Elena was born in August 2001, but US wasn't in Afghanistan until after September 2001. So did Penelope leave Elena with her mother while she was overseas? Did she and Victor serve separate tours? Penelope is supposed to be 38, but has a 15 year old. I know lots of people have kids in their early 20's but that's a lot of life events to squeeze in between High School and childbirth: College/nursing school, marriage, military service, then childbirth. Hopefully the next seasons will find a way iron out the discrepancies in the timeline. This isn't the only show that does this, Blue Bloods has the exact same problem.

I know several women who have done exactly that, so it seems entirely plausible to me.
Going on tour with a small child, they probably either took separate tours, or indeed left Elena and Alex with Lydia or Victor's parents.

Many choose to have kids in their 30s nowadays, once they have their life sorted out, but lots also have their kids in their 20s while they are still getting their lives on track, it's not uncommon.

Also, she probably got her nursing degree through the army.

Here's another one which I noticed in the first few episodes:

Rita Moreno's character said she's 70 (even though Moreno herself is 85, but she can get away with it). That would make her born in 1946.

She had a flashback to when she first met her husband in 1958, to which she was in a nightclub and he came up to her and asked her to dance. That would make her 12 years old, even though the actress who played her younger self was not 12 years old; more like early/mid 20s. The guy playing her younger husband was also in his 20s, at least.

She said she was a 'young girl' when she left Cuba in 1962, which would have made her either 16 if we go by 1946, or late 20s if we go by meeting her husband in 1958.

Her daughter is 38, so she was born in 1978. Which means Moreno's character was either 32 when she had her, or in her early 40s, if we go by '1958'.

No sense of time, whatsoever, with this character.

I noticed those too. I try not to let impossible timelines in TV shows get to me, but the inaccuracies in this show are very noticeable.

I admit Abuelita's timeline is off, but I threw that to the writers/producers/whatever changing their minds on her story or Abuelita herslef lying about her age, either way I was like huh that doesn't quite add up, but it doesn't really bother me.
