one day at a time on 33 bux an hour

ya, thats a hard life
are they now gonna remake good times with the family living in beverly hills but having problems making their mortgage payments?

reply

33 bucks an hour isn't a lot when it's supporting 4 people in a major metropolitan area. I've seen a lot of posts about this, but it really isn't a ton of money. Is it enough to get by? Sure. Is it enough to live a cushy life? Not really.

Plus, the mom has two kids in private school so that's a big chunk of change. But I still find it hard she drove the same car for 17 years until it broke down

reply

who told her to send the kids to private school?
and it appeared that they live in east la, which is the hellhole people think it is and where one can get a 3 bedroom for around 1500 bux
and grandma gets her ss checks
so they shouldnt be "struggling"
this is as much of a stretch as believing the daughter figured out that she was gay because she has a crush on kristin stewart (one of the manliest female actors in hollywood) and watched a threesome and dug looking at the girls

Well, the signs were there all season long that she was gay. Not just Kristen Stewart, but her friendship with Carmen, her binge-watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, her reluctance to have her Quinceanera and wear make-up.

Send the kids to public school and save at least $20,000 (or more) per year.

Plus, she gets child support from the father.

reply

People who say things like "send the kids to public school" to save money probably don't realize that in some areas of the country, the public schools are utter crap. Public schools in many areas of the US are underfunded and overcrowded and only a very few percent of the school population get anything out of going that is necessary.

reply

I don't think they were living in a ghetto area. Not with the money she was making, plus the child support.

reply

Plus her landlord is supposed to have money, why would he live in a slum area with money?

I agree OP, I was a bit bemused when they said how much she was earning, that is a good living, where you shoukd not have to struggle to make ends meet. Plus the support from her husband, they are in a very lucky position, not rich, but in no way poor.

We have people here struggling with just £5 an hour to raise a family.

reply

She was making 52,000 before she demanded a raise. How much social security is her mother getting? How long did she pay into it? How long did she work in America? Did she ever work? If she didn't she'd be getting her husband's, but how long did he work in America? Salaries for private security range from 50,000 to 250,000 on average. Let's say he made 125,000. Annual obligation would be around 31,000.

Now that's she making 68,640, with child support that would be just under 100 grand, not including her mother's salary or any work bonuses. With 2 kids in private school, whether she should be sending them or not, she's doing OK. Even if she weren't sending them to private school, 100K really isn't a lot of money. Maybe if she were in the midwest, it'd go farther.

Do you guys realize that a 3 bedroom apartment in LA can be like $3,000 or $4,000 a month?

reply

I think people who don't live in pricey areas just don't get it. She's certainly not poor by any means in any area. But she's not making so much that she wouldn't need to budget and prioritize. In a major city, the money just doesn't go as far. As to the car - I think the episode made it pretty clear the car was more of a sentimental thing as opposed to strictly budgetary.

First of all, she's working in in a private medical practice, not in a hospital, and it usually pays better and she have a lot of experience + she's doing a lot of other things, besides to be a nurse, so I would say her salary is okay.

-- and as others already pointed out, her kids go to a private Catholic school, hence the nuns, and that's expensive.
