This was a good binge BUT

The conflict with these superiors at the police office,,,making them look amazingly stupid and pompous and unable to see anything except I'm the boss whst I think goes..instead of pursuing all leads was irritating,,

I'm not sure I get the etiology of Marcella's strangeness..the loss of a baby is awful, but it doesn't account for any of her behavior,,it just doesn't,..overly contrived,,British writing is usual a little better in my experience.

Acting was, good. And I was entertained, however these irritating contrivances almost caused me to stop watch the last episode...

I have several problems with the cluttered script but never once did I consider bailing on Marcella. Much of this is due to the talented Anna Friel. She captured my attention early on. That said, the fugue state device took a toll. The moving of Grace’s corpse being the most glaring example.

I never bought Marcella and Jason as having been together for years. The marriage/adultery/dead child backstory was, for me, one of the least successful aspects of the series. Rav Sangha was especially bland, Laura Porter better, and Travis the best part of the unit.

If I'm entertained by a series I can usually overlook the problems with some contrivances...but these got to me..

Is there another season??? Or was this it,,

reply

I think, tom, that you may get to binge watch this again. My guess it's far from over.

reply

I saw your post so I looked it up and read the Huffington Post article ...so yeah. Season two. Great!

reply

Right ... still lots of loose ends. Although, I have to say, serials that go on and on are one thing that bothers me. it gets a little frustrating when you think you might be nearing a conclusion, only to have the carrot skating ahead again.

I think they write them so they can stop at any time if need be, but also can move forard. In this one, I guess I am intrigued because there are a lot of unanswered questions ... why did we meet that guy near the beginning, Clive Bonn ... what part does he play in all this? Will we see him again?

How exactly did little Marcella move Grace's body, and why? And, of course, a big one ... what did Marcella see when she went into Grace's home, and why did she end up with a knock on her head?

reply

Absolutely..I agree.. And I'm interested in all those things. Which is why I'm glad it is going to come back for season two. ...I forgot about the guy Clive Bonn??? I may have to look back. Who is he???

reply

Well, not to spoil your looking back, but he was the good-looking guy who was fooling around on his wife. He was spotted outside somewhere suspicious on the CCTV footage, athough I don't remember how that related.

I think he was interviewed in relation to the Carol Fincher murder. At any rate, even though this case has a lot of poeple in it, it still seems like a small world, everyone somehow interrelated. Maybe he was thrown in to throw us off Peter Cullen, who sort of looked like him. But maybe he won't be left in the dust and we'll meet up with him again.

Have you see The Fall? The first season was great, the second season not so much. I think there may be a third season now.

Edit: Just a pre-warning about The Fall if you haven't seen it. It is very dark.

reply

Yes,I remember,,,he was interviewed,maybe twice???

Then nothing,,,

reply

I had to chuckle when you said "cluttered script" because I was thinking, if I write a review, I might title it, More Characters Than a Harry Potter Novel. We met so many people in the first few episodes, I had to go back and rewatch. I'm glad I did because I began to feel more that there was an intelligent progression rather than hodge podge.

As I mentioned in a reply to the OP, I think we will eventually find out why Grace's body was moved ... in an upcoming season ... and how. How the heck could little Marcella have moved statuesque Grace? I wondered about Jason, too. He was no doubt dashing, but I think we were being tantalized with Tim. I bet that will be a theme that plays out in subsequent season(s).

The comparison to Harry Potter might then hold. I have read that JK Rowling very carefully plotted her books. So perhaps some of those people who popped up in Marcella will show up again until all the threads have been pulled up in one big beautiful tapestry. That is, if there is ever an end.

reply

I'm certain your right ,,they don't do anything for nothing,,especially when filming,.writing maybe,,,but when filming it is for a reason..

Hans Rosenfeldt written many of the episodes. He was also the head writer of the original Bridge series,so there is much in common with the attitude of her main character(altho not Asperger this time) but still full commitment, cold blood, clever, intuition native, authentic.

About the police station status he overrides his previous writing and now main character doesn't enjoy any respect. She has to earn it day by day.And she is doing in a way that everyone else would be quitted in a sec.

Against all odds tho she suffers she handles. Its a victory again (as in Broen series) to uniqueness, individuality and commitment.
This is my personal opinion.

I think that the 20-episode first season of The Killing and The Bridge are the best crime shows ever done - even with subtitles being necessary.

reply

I just may have to agree. If you haven't tried "Justified" I really liked it. It is on Netflix and Amazon now. Ended a year ago...very well done. Good acting and stories way above what you usually get on a lot of tv..

I have to admit that I seldom ever look at American TV shows anymore. I download everything I watch these days. Pretty much all of it is European or British, some Israeli and some Australian. (I don't really include Britain in Europe.) I probably already have enough to watch for the next six or nine months.

reply

I guess neither does Britain consider themselves part of Europe ...
I've never seen Israeli tv,or film for that matter that I can think of.
I watch alt of of British. I have Acorn on streaming.
I too am way behind. Several series I watch on cable I am now over a year behind. 5 of them I think.

I have some Swedish and Norwegian series that are similar to Vera I guess from th British screen.

A good friend of mine is is India. He see everything as you do. From the Internet.

Well keep it on your list. You never know.

If you can get a copy of Hatufim with good subtitles, watch it. It is phenomenal. The Americans made an Americanised version of it called Homeland - a very poor substitute. I wish they'd stop doing Americanised versions of other people's creative works.

reply

Oh I do know Homeland ..I watched for a few seasons. Last year I didn't watch. It became tedious. I'd like to see the Israeli original.

reply

I'd like to see the Israeli original.
