Why Is The Cast So Smartly Dressed Yet Marchella Looks Dreadfully Drab?

Seems very odd...

It's also odd that they made the title character the most unlikable person in the show. Can't stand her.

reply

I can't stand her. I was kinda hoping she'd get stabbed in the neck.

reply

I think it's one of those lame "I'm such a great detective that I can act/dress any way I like and get away with it" type of things. Ugh.

Yeah, it is like 90% of cop shows follow the same tired formula. The star detective is an out-of-the-box thinking semi-misanthrope with autistic tendencies who dresses odd so as to stand out. The captain or chief is always some buttocks-kissing bureaucrat who is constantly convince the star detective is out of their mind, despite solving 98 straight cold-cases in the lat year alone. The star always gets some rookie partner who tries to go by the book and constantly threatens to report the star to the boss, because just like the boss they think the start is incompetent despite solving the last 98 cold cases. The star always leads the charge into the criminal's lair, ignoring the highly competent and well equipped entry team in the hallway behind them, who have just come up the stairs making more noise than a battalion of Panzers through the Ardennes, but the criminal is taken by complete surprise, even after the door is kicked in. They look up with this "where did you come from?" wide-eyed stare. But I digress. At least Raylan mixed it up a bit. ;-)

I think my percentage of Chimp DNA is higher than others. Cleaver Greene

Love this summary! :-D the formulaic bullsh*t really irks me, and it bothers me when it comes from British shows because they are always far superior than the rest.

reply

Very funny.

I just hope that in this case her suspect is not the serial killer.

reply

you could be describing Stan Lee's "Lucky Man" here too!

I just finished binge-watching "The Killing" on Netflix and now I'm dying laughing at that description. These shows all follow the same tropes but somehow it must be a winning formula since they keep getting made.

I figured Marcella having some sort of mental/emotional issue that made her dress like a slob. Many people who go through major depressive episodes let their personal hygiene or looks fall to the wayside as a result.

reply

It's the Nordic Noir substitute for a tacky jumper type outfit. (Her parka is the linchpin, tho...)

reply

That actually makes a lot of sense. She definitely has a Sarah Lund vibe.

reply

She's cast as a character suffering from depression after the death of a child and the break-up of a marriage. So maybe smart and trendy might not fit.

reply

I like her clothes. They look comfortable and okay for work. At least she's not wearing a low cut tank top and stiletto heels. She's supposed to be depressed, so no makeup. I haven't watched but 2 episodes but that downer attitude and clinging to her husband has gotten old.

reply

This is something very common in British TV. Just take a look at The Fall with Gillian Anderson or Wallander with Kenneth Branagh. In American TV they use excessive a lot of make up. That's my opinion.

reply

To emphasize the fact that she's severely depressed.

reply

Well, think about it: If you sacrificed everything for a family only to have your significant other leave you for someone else who also happen to be more attractive and lucrative than you, wouldn't you feel like crap and wouldn't that reflect in the way your act and dress? If you agree, then it's only proper that they've added this to her character since that's her background from the start.
