Do they get any kind of weapons training at all? Hand to hand combat? Something? Main character is running around with no means to protect herself.

Yes, I find it hard to believe this woman who is about 5' 2" and 100 pounds is repeatedly rushing alone and unarmed into the dens of psycho killers and other miscreants.
