Do police in London not carry guns
Marcella is basically fighting with sticks. Is she like a citizen police or something. LMAO
shareMarcella is basically fighting with sticks. Is she like a citizen police or something. LMAO
shareI've watched many British cop dramas before and the officers and detectives never have guns. The beat cop may have a taser but that's about it. I googled about this exact topic and there are many articles about why British police don't have guns and why that may change in the future, but who knows.
shareThey haven't carried in a long time. It drives me crazy watching British cop shows. They are usually very good shows but so many crimes happen right in front of them and they either get beat up, shot, or the criminal gets away. They are basically a police force of mall cops.
shareThat is insane and you are basing reality on what shows you've seen????? Tv isn't reality...and Britain has extremely low crime ,like most of Europe...America is because of guns killing on avg 300 people a day ,a day ...the human rights nation...30,000 a years fro gunshot wounds alone...more civilians killed by guns in America since 1968 that all the people that have died in all the American WARS!!! Ever!
I don't think most Americans are LAUGHING THERE ASSES OFF as one post says he is doing over the silly British police. It is called civilization....
However the scene with Yahn was not too civilized,,it seems all police everywhere are allowed to act like the criminals to excise information that people don't have in the first place..at least on tv. I'm not sure what the point is,other than Marcella seems off her own rocker., some of the time..
I'm on ep 6 and she has or the police have seemed to violate everyones rights on hunches and bad police work,,or some luck, that doesn't pan out,,,so far at least...
Even so,..I like this drama..it is keeping us in the dark..but the police tactics seem simalar to what we see on American procedurals..loosely put together cops screaming and stressing the holy hell out of many innocent people,...many might lash out after being accused and screamed at. Etc..not that is is smart...
While the criminals go unscathed...we'll see how it ends...
I do like Brit tv though,,it is usually well made and intelligent..They don't put out as many as America and they put more time into each episode...usually anyhow..The 24 ep year series is not something they do at all thankfully ..
America has more guns per capita than any other nation by far, yet we don't have the most murders per capita, we're not even in the top 10 countries, not even the top 100 countries, coming in at #111 with 4.7 murders per 100,000.
Even this is artificially high, because it includes the data from cities with strict gun control like
Detroit with 54.6 murders per 100,000 per year.
New Orleans 53.2
St. Louis 35.5
Baltimore 34.9
Newark 34.4
Oakland 31.8
Stockton 23.7
Kansas City 22.6
Philadelphia 21.5
Cleveland 21.3
Memphis 20.2
Atlanta 19.0
Chicago 18.5
Even with all those socialist utopias with strict gun control and their high murder rates, America's murder rate per capita is only 4.7 per 100,000.
Plano Texas, where virtually everyone owns at least one gun, has a murder rate of only 0.4 per 100,000.
Honduras, with strict gun control is #1 in the world with 90 murders per 100,000.
Virtually all the countries with higher murder rates than America have strict gun control.
Murder rates and violent crimes rates in general always decrease after States allow citizens to carry concealed handguns. And despite the fears of people who oppose the civil right of self defense, citizens who carry concealed handguns rarely ever commit crimes, and they don't act like "cowboys", they don't shoot innocent people, etc.
God bless the police for all they do to reduce crime and put criminals behind bars. But they are not, and cannot be our bodyguards.
It is a basic human right, a civil right, to be able to defend your life and those of your loved ones.
Revoking that right always leads to a rise in violent crime.
Guns are not the problem. In fact, a high density of legally owned firearms is associated with less illegal aggressive behavior, lower rates of violent crime.
Quoting from JOYCE LEE MALCOLM, GUNS AND VIOLENCE: THE ENGLISH EXPERIENCE 204
(2002)
"Indeed, “data on fire‐arms ownership by constabulary area in England,” like data
from the United States, show “a negative correlation,” that is,
“where firearms are most dense violent crime rates are lowest,
and where guns are least dense violent crime rates are high‐
est.”
and from:
Hans Toch & Alan J. Lizotte, Research and Policy: The Case for Gun Control, in
PSYCHOLOGY & SOCIAL POLICY 223, 232 (Peter Suedfeld & Philip E. Tetlock eds.,
1992)
“[T]he fact that national patterns show little violent
crime where guns are most dense implies that guns do not elicit aggression in any
meaningful way. . . . Quite the contrary, these findings suggest that high saturations
of guns in places, or something correlated with that condition, inhibit illegal aggression.”
Violent criminals mixed with defenseless victims ends badly with high rates of violent crimes. Criminals tend to be young adult males who exhibit a high disparity of force over their victims. Where citizens are denied the basic human right to self defense, the murder rate is much higher than areas where citizens are allowed their right to self defense with firearms.
Statistically, the safest areas to live are those where citizens are armed.
The most murders occur in large cities with strict gun control. Mass shootings tend to occur in areas or venues with gun control, or as I like to call them, "defenseless victim killing zones".
There is some disinformation out there which doesn't seem to go away, such as the old canard that 'you're more likely to be killed with your own gun than to defend your life with it'. Handguns are used defensively over 1 million times per year, most of the time without having to fire them. Bad guys who see their intended victim is armed suddenly want to be somewhere else. (I had that experience once.)There are numerous studies on this, by John Lott, Gary Kleck, and others.
As for the British, I believe at least some of the police are armed; their tactical teams are certainly armed.
Yes but there are 200 or so nations in the world. For USA to be behind 100 others should be embarrassment, being the leading country in so many other regards. I've read elsewhere USA is leading with violent crime rate among the "first world countries".
shareThat's a really ignorant and insulting thing to say.
British police are among the world's finest - if not THE finest. Not being armed to the teeth means they must have their wits about them when dealing with armed and dangerous criminals.
Yes, there are armed tactical units, and they are heavily trained to use their weaponry only as an absolute last resort - and then never to shoot to kill.
Something American police should well consider.
The English police are twats. But we are lucky that armed criminals remain relatively rare here in the UK.
shareThey do Not carry guns.
And they think Americans are "cowboys" for walking around strapped all the time. LoL
Only the Special Branch carries guns because they protect high value targets. Hand guns would be issued when there is an armed event and those who have been trained will be assigned. The theory is that guns beget guns and this is generally true. Compared to other police forces around the world a police killing is very unusual although beat cops have been shot by criminals. There have been cases, especially if there is a major event, such as a riot, or a police chase of armed criminals, where innocent bystanders have been shot. That leads to a major investigation at the highest levels.
shareBtw, I was "LoL"-ing at my own country, not the Brits for thinking we are "cowboys" for walking around strapped even to the grocery store. Many Americans who support the 2nd Amendment truly seem to want to flaunt it. It makes us all look silly.
Thank you for the in-depth info about guns in British Law Enforcement. I had heard that statistics bore out a decline in shootings and gun-related deaths since the police stopped carrying; I think that is wonderful!
Police here have not STOPPED carrying. Police here do not as a matter of course. I doubt that there is a decline in gun related deaths in the UK. It is however regrettable though that one time law regarding the shooting of a POLICEMAN was a mandatory death sentence. This is why back in the day gang bosses used to try and make sure no one was armed with a firearm. All could in theory be hung should a policeman get killed by a firearm. relaxing that has done the do gooders so well as no policemen or indeed any one has ever ever been shot. My arse. Just today for egample at least five cops in london have been stabbed as a result of US cops running around firing indiscriminately at black people. Well that is what the yobs in the park were on about. Yes lets attack cops with the knives we brought along just in case we had a picnic.
Wanna hear good comedic routines about the 2nd amendment watch Jim Jeffries shows.
Satirists here in the UK have concluded that Police in the US already armed are being shot so having twice and many guns might be the way forward with one being loaded cocked and permanently held in hand.
"US cops running around firing indiscriminately at black people"
A thoroughly moronic statement. No such thing has ever occurred.
You seem as if you may be in the UK. Are people allowed to have guns for hunting and go hunting?
shareMany people in the UK hunt or shoot for sport. Getting licensed is certainly easier if one lives in a rural area where hunting is allowed (of course there are laws regarding seasons for various animals - except foxes, shrug - like most places that care about their rural environment). In short, having a rifle when you live in a rural county is a lot easier than carrying a concealed handgun in a city. England is somewhat more sensitive about handguns than the US. Most places are. Indeed many US states have handgun laws that are similar to those in Europe, the UK, etc. I don't think Russia currently has many laws restricting handguns, and I'm uncertain about the other former SSRs, but the former satellites (Poland, Hungary, et al) appear to follow European sensibilities. Japan, I believe discourages private handgun use, but has armed police. No idea about Taiwan or South Korea. No idea about China (PRC), or Indonesia, or Malaysia, etc.
I strongly suspect all EU countries have (at least on the books) very similar laws about firearm possession, license requirements, and penalties, otherwise there would be constant mandatory inspections - one of the "things" creating the EU was meant to stop.
All countries currently have well-armed "response" units. It's also useful to remember that not every country has a Constitution that bans military operations inside the country, nor in fact does every country have a Constitution.
In some countries, school crossing guards must be police officers, but they are generally banned from carrying firearms.
Nobody in the world except Amerca and police states have armed police like America. This is common knowledge ,I thought???
When the Brits need that kind of power they have special units...highly trained police units for that. I believe it is how most of Europe handles these things,,I think??? It is called living in a civilized nations,..just saying,..
The world knows that things have gotten out of control in America with guns,,now the police are afraid to go out in the field, everyone is armed,,is isn't natural..thatt is for sure,..
Same over here in New Zealand. No need for cops to carry guns. We have well trained units that are armed when they need to be, but anything else is overkill.
shareHow should it be,,.congrats...i grieve everyday the situation in my country. The republicans here have made us a laughing stock, not to mention the sad situation we all find ourselves in. 90 plus % of the public want gun control. Until the republican congress because majority democrats,we can't do a thing.
Don't Canadian cops carry guns? Maybe not the RCPM, but idk.
shareDon't believe a thing Tomkofof is saying, he has no clue what he's talking about. He says that only "police states" have armed cops, which couldn't be further from the truth. The vast majority of civilized countries in the world have armed police. England and Australia are the exception, not the rule. France, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Finland, the list goes on and on...all armed police. Even Norway, where police have been armed from time to time, still carry a handgun and a submachinegun in the trunk of every patrol car. And to answer your question, yes, Canadian police (RCMP) are armed. I used to live in Canada, and have been a cop for 15 years. What people like Tomkofof never mention is the violent crime rate per capita of England vs other countries. Nearly the entire civilized world has armed police. I sure wouldn't use England as an example of success.

+90% of the people want gun control?...
In what galaxy does this happen?
I think that number refers mainly to people who support background checks:

Soooo, I just went to London and was blown away that a majority of police carry tasers. Wow, I don't know how I even felt seeing that. I did feel much safer in London than in the US.
shareI've been there. And love it.... London is such a different place..and of course it is a city,,,can't compare Britain and USA,either....BUT London is a wonder place. It use to be just billyclubs.. I don't like tasers, but they must have something.
The use of guns anywhere is the world simply doesn't compare to the US. It is such a bizarre thing that has happened. I'm all for protectiom and I'm ok with collectors.
I've always thought,,if so many people want ( there is no need for semi automatic weapons) these killing machines,,,then put them under lock and key separate from amo in a place like a gun club where they can be safely used in a protected environment.
Hunting and a handguns are different. That has to be left to the person and their own responsibility. But these others...it is insane to be allowed as many with as much amo as anyone wants. And child can see this. It's a political problem that has taken countless lives for nothing.
The 2nd amendment clearly didn't intend this. The context and spirit...and the words talk to the need AT THE TIME for a militia ...period.!!! Not for private ownership....the people who are for guns, guns, guns,,,know this,,it is a scam...and it is mostly coming from a lobby. The gun lobby is interested in one thing,,$$$. Not lives ...
Oh,I can go on and on. Lol..
Firearm possession allows the weak, the cornered, the outnumbered to defend themselves.
shareBritish police are regional outside of London and operate under the control of a Chief Constable in each region. The Metropolitan Police operate in London under the control of a Commissioner. Most police officers do not carry guns but there are approximately 2700 armed police in London and 900 in the rest of England. Additional weapons can be requisitioned as circumstances require. Marcella is a detective sergeant in London. She reports to an inspector and a chief inspector in the series. The police are not "mall police". New Scotland Yard is the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police and is world renown for its capabilities. Uniformed Police may carry truncheons and handcuffs as well as communication devices. The possession of weapons by the public is strictly controlled. People have to have a valid reason for ownership of a weapon and be known to a magistrate for a number of years.
Murders in the UK are far less than the USA and the number of gun murders is very very low. There is nothing to lmao about murder!
