Okay, I have watched every episode, but I don't get the 'ferals'. It has been just three years since the 'rising', so are these things created by the original vampires who were lurking in the shadows of Seattle just waiting for the eruption (lol), or did I miss an explanation?

No clear explanation, but I would guess that they are either vamps that have been feeding on other vamps or perhaps non-human blood. Like the "subsiders" in the movie "Daybreakers". Complete guess though since it was not explained.

I'd imagine that they were a relatively small sub-group keeping to the shadows and pacing themselves to keep up the masquerade (To steal another series' vernacular) but when Yellowstone popped the Volcanic Winter provided the (cloud) cover and the chaos that allowed them to come out of the shadows and started feeding indiscriminately thus survivors who turn are not held to the same standards and their Population increased exponentially

We still have another type of vampire : the white creatures Vanessa and Susan met in the tunnels. Axel mentionned he even run into them underwater. I wonder if this is what happens to vampires if they mainly feed on corpses ?
Only human blood is pure. If you were feeding on animal blood, you will become feral.
