ITV axes Jericho

Disappointing news from ITV as they have announced that there will be no further episodes of "Jericho" made.

It is believed that there are three reasons for the cancellation of the show. Disappointing viewing figures - Jericho opened with over 3 million viewers but steadily lost viewers throughout its run. Production costs - it is believed that the series was expensive to make due to its period setting and the fact that the producers effectively built a small town to film the series. New faces - following a number of ITV dramas failing to live up to expectations they are implementing a significant reshuffle at the executive level with a number of staff leaving and new faces being brought in.

Have to say I for one am disappointed to hear that as I quite enjoyed Jericho and would have liked to have seen a second series. It is sad to see some decent programming from ITV being cancelled due in part to what I consider to have been some poor scheduling decisions by the channel.

I'm disappointed, too, Mark, but not surprised.

There was very little discussion here on IMDb, which, although not being in any way a scientific indicator of popularity, was a warning that there wasn't a lot of interest in the production.

Pity, because it was something a little different.

If there aren't any skeletons in a man's closet, there's probably a Bertha in his attic.

To be honest, the harsh drop in viewership, which must be the main reason for the cancellation, is not very surprising given the show's writing. I just finished episode five, and it was quite painful to watch. I though the show started out on a pretty strong note with the extended pilot, but at this point, almost all of the main characters have lost their remaining credibility. The scene of Annie talking to her son about his dad was particularly poor, along with the scenes at the estate.

Then the story took all the predictable turns. Trying to imagine another season with a second story arc, it seems quite obvious that the writers were already struggling with telling the one. I would've liked this show as a British alternative to "Hell on Wheels", but it was in dire need of a strong team of script doctors if it were ever to succeed.

This really sucks. Great show too. What a shame. Idiot executives. That's all I can say.

I hate it when shows are dumped like this.. its like reading a rare book that gets thrown out when you're half way through it..
