Harberts: The other thing we are really excited about in season two is, for all the Star Trek fans that have been going bonkers about “How is this possible? Micheal Burnham is the foster sister of Spock… How come they don’t know about the mycelial network in the other [Star Trek shows]?” Part of our goal for this season is to cement Discovery firmly in the timeline of Star Trek canon. And to explain to the audience how these things reconcile.

In a statement, Discovery co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman described the casting journey:
Through 52 years of television and film, a parallel universe and a mirror universe, Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek. The great Leonard Nimoy, then the brilliant Zachary Quinto, brought incomparable humanity to a character forever torn between logic and emotion. We searched for months for an actor who would, like them, bring his own interpretation to the role. An actor who would, like them, effortlessly embody Spock’s greatest qualities, beyond obvious logic: empathy, intuition, compassion, confusion, and yearning. Ethan Peck walked into the room inhabiting all of these qualities, aware of his daunting responsibility to Leonard, Zack, and the fans, and ready to confront the challenge in the service of protecting and expanding on Spock’s legacy. In that spirit, we’re thrilled to welcome him to the family.
Mr. Spock remains the only member of the original bridge crew to span every era of Star Trek.
Spock wouldn't dare be seen on such a terrible show such as Enterprise.

We hope we get a better look at Star Trek: Discovery season two on Saturday as part of the New York Comic Con panel. But before the big event, we have some teases of the second season from actresses Mary Wiseman (Tilly) and Jayne Brook (Admiral Cornwell) as well as a look at how Short Treks actress Yadira Helena Guevara Prip was transformed for “Runaway.”
Reminder: Discovery NYCC panel Saturday Afternoon

Speaking of canon, when a fan asked if there was “any chance we will see of the original Star Trek characters on the show besides Spock?” Alex Kurtzman replied simply “yes.” The producer then teased the return of some aliens that are very familiar to Captain Pike, saying:
You guys like Talosians? We should see some.
Several cast interviews but this is the most interesting with producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin.

Is “The Cage” a touchstone for bringing this season into alignment with canon?
Alex Kurtzman: We are going to bring everything into alignment at the end of the season, and “The Cage” will be touched on, but in ways that I think are hopefully surprising and unexpected. I think one of the things that I’ve really enjoyed in my time working on Star Trek is looking at stories that have been told but then really examining them for the gray areas, the areas where certain things can be filled in or built on, without violating canon. So that’s a big part of what we’re doing this season.
What made you decide to introduce Spock, after saying you were not going to do so?
Alex Kurtzman: What gets me so excited about the story that we get to tell with Spock this season is that it’s the unwritten chapter of Spock. This is not the Spock that you know from the beginning of TOS, this is pre-TOS. He is not that formed Vulcan yet. His experience with the Red Angel and the signals has fried his logical brain. He cannot make sense of it. And he is emotionally ill-equipped to deal with it. So both logic and emotion are failing him, totally. And he is totally unsure of himself and trying to figure out how to make sense of the mystery and where he fits into the world. And it’s through his complicated relationship with his sister that he’s able to figure out how to become and actualize himself as the Spock that we know from TOS. And that’s really exciting to us because it in no way violates canon, it just builds on what’s been set before.
