They should've set the movie in the 90s

These days most people couldn't care less about anyone's sexual orientation.

True - and other characters in the movie were perfectly accepting of Simon. But that doesn't mean coming out to friends and family is easy, and that was what the story was essentially about.

It really depends on where you are on the planet, being gay in New York or California is a whole lot different than Alabama or Kentucky.

reply

"Alabama or Kentucky". HA HA! I bet being gay in Iran or Nigeria would make Alabama or Kentucky look like Pride Week in Frisco.

reply

Oh ho ho! You are going out of the states, for sure, they would be executed in Iran or Nigeria.

This is simply not true. In high school it is very difficult for someone to come out. After high school people are more accepting and don't really care. During high school it can be hell. And actually what he found was people were much more supportive than he feared.

Which is also a total normal behavior. You usually always imagine worst case scenarios if you hide something, you are aware people wouldn't like to hear about you. Look alone at his dad and his jokes against homosexuals. Why would you assume that he is just cool with it, especially if you read in the internet of parents sending their kids STILL to camps to get "healed".

In the 90s the poor kid had a much worse time, as people weren't so much aware about being gay. Back then people imagined gays to be all more like RuPaul, Rock Hudson was quite a big shock and "just" a few years ago. No, this had been a more depressive movie, especially because the parents had only being cool with it so fast in a Hollywood movie, so far from realistic.

You're all over the place and have no idea what you're talking about.

reply

High school is hell for most people no matter what.
