Yeah, I know that one of the characters is supposed to be Danny Ocean's sister or niece or cousin or something, but this movie has nothing to do with either incarnation of Ocean's 11. Why not just make it a heist movie on it's own merit without trying to tie to the Ocean's movies by the thinnest of threads?
That's true, but the Ocean's franchise was on a steady decline with every new title. George Clooney is no longer a box-office-draw (look Tomorrow land) and I don't see how being a part of the franchise will help it boost its income. Maybe making a brand new franchise from scratch with this would be a smarter way, heck with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett on the roster WB had a healthy foundation to start something new rather than leaning it on a franchise which has a dubious Box Office potential to begin with (peaking with the first movie definitely isn't a good sign).
I'm with the others on this. I'm not sure how much brand recognition helps this movie.
Look at a movie like A League of Their Own. It was a successful movie starring women and it was its own thing. It wasn't Major Leaguettes or Cow Durham. It didn't have to leach on to a male movie for its success.
It helps it a lot, its a known thing. It is without a doubt drawn more attention because of that name than it would have ever had being an original concept. People did and still do like the first film. Ocean has value even if the films were in decline, and Clooney's current success has little to do with a past good film, he isn't the star of this film.
Can they make a film without the Ocean name and be successful? sure, but that doesn't change that its safer doing it this way. Its a lazy way to create a female led film, much like the Ghostbusters debacle.
I don't know that it really is that much safer. With the dislike and backlash of the female Ghostbusters and with the lackluster reception that the new Overboard movie is getting and the backlash that other gender flip movies that have been announced are getting, it seems the audiences are saying they don't want gender flip movies.
I think it will take a few more box offices flops for that. Oceans 8 May finish over 40 mil domestic open. They will consider that a success somewhat related to the Ocean name.
